Economy expected to grow in 'robust fashion' into 2025Muireann DuffyThe Irish economy is expected to grow "in a robust fashion" in 2024 and 2025, according to the ESRI. In its latest quarter economic commentary, the institute says headline and underlying indicators suggest the economy will perform well over the coming months, driven by a "better-than-expected international outlook and robust domestic growth". Modified domestic demand (MDD), which is a measure of domestic economic activity, is expected to grow by 2.2 per cent this year, and 2.5 per cent in 2025, prompted by an increase in real income of an estimated 3 per cent. The commentary also describes the issue of 'capacity constraints' as "critical", noting: "Recent data from the Housing Commission suggest an upward revision in house supply targets will be needed to cater for demographic demand for housing". The ESRI acknowledges that while housing supply is on an "upward trajectory", the pace at which housing is being delivered must increase in order to meet demand.

Significant rise in Covid-19 cases in Ireland, HPSC confirms
Stock imageThere has been a significant rise in the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the past week, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) confirmed. The latest figures, which accounted for 1,049 confirmed cases in the week to last Saturday are up 60pc compared to the previous weeks which accounted for 650 cases. 486 hospitalisations have been reported in the last week, which makes for a 56pc increase as opposed to the previous week. While three Covid-19 related deaths have been reported in the past week, no intensive care admissions have been linked to the virus. The increase of circulation of the Covid-19 virus has impacted vulnerable locations such as healthcare settings, hospitals, and nursing homes.

Protest against misogyny to take place in TullamoreOffaly County Councillor Aoife Masterson has urged people to "continue the protest" against misogyny at a rally in Lloyd Park, Tullamore this weekend. The Sinn Féin Councillor tweeted yesterday, encouraging people to "join us this weekend as we call for justice for Natasha and all victims." Protests are continuing up and down the country in solidarity with 24-year-old Natasha O'Brien, who was knocked unconscious during an attack on O'Connell Street in Limerick City in May 2022. Her attacker, 22-year-old serving soldier Cathal Crotty, was convicted of assault but given a three-year fully suspended sentence. This protest is due to take place on Saturday, June 29 from 1pm to 2pm.

Offaly's Independent Ireland councillor is new chair of Edenderry Municipal District
EDENDERRY man Fergus McDonnell has completed his comeback to Offaly County Council by being elected Cathaoirleach of Edenderry Municipal District. Cllr McDonnell, who returned to the local authority in the election earlier this month as a candidate for the new Independent Ireland party, was nominated for the Edenderry chair by the Fine Gael party. He then proposed Cllr McDonnell as the new chair and was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Liam Quinn. In the absence of any other proposals Cllr McDonnell was elected without a vote.
