It was not the warmest or the wettest on record but 2025 was the worst year for climate change, analysis from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) shows. That is because the Earth’s energy imbalance became more extreme with potentially dire consequences for now and far into the future. “In 2025 observed global ocean heat content set a record,” the WMO report, published on Monday, states. As waters warm they expand, increasing sea level. The more they warm, the more ice sheets they melt, increasing sea level further.

This year’s Community Shield will be played at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, the FA have announced. The match between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners is traditionally played at Wembley, but the FA said it is unavailable on August 15 and 16 due to pre-planned concerts. The Principality Stadium hosted six Community Shields between 2001 and 2006 while the new-look Wembley was under construction. Since returning to Wembley in 2007, the Community Shield has moved twice – to Villa Park in 2012 due to the Olympics and the King Power Stadium in 2022 as the national stadium hosted the Women’s European Championship final. In the event of Arsenal winning both the title and the FA Cup, next season's Community Shield would be played between themselves and the runners-up in the Premier League.

Dublin manager Ger Brennan may avoid an immediate 12-week suspension arising from his sending off in Sunday’s Division 1 defeat to Galway. Galway’s strength and conditioning coach Cian Breathnach McGinn could also escape the punishment due to an anomaly in the GAA Official Guide. Brennan appeared to take exception with Breathnach McGinn who had pushed Dublin player Brian Howard. Alternatively, the CCCC may choose to hand down Category IIa (ii) disruptive conduct punishments to Brennan and Breathnach McGinn, which would likely result in one-match bans for the pair. Breathnach McGinn risks missing Galway’s Connacht semi-final against Leitrim or Sligo on April 25/26.

Michael Owen has warned that the Manchester United hierarchy would be ‘lynched’ if they got rid of Michael Carrick at the end of the season and his replacement flopped at Old Trafford. This Manchester United team look like they're on the way back at this stage. They're winning games, they're looking progressive, some of the players are playing the best football they've played in years. A private space company will try to land on the 'potentially hazardous' asteroid Apophis when it skims past Earth in three years' time. Apophis, which measures 340 metres (1,115 feet) across, was first discovered in 2004 and is heading in our direction from 140 million miles (225 million km) away. As it flies by just 19,800 miles (32,000km) above our planet, two landers will attempt to touch down on the asteroid. When Apophis skims past Earth, its trajectory will take it so low that it will pass under geostationary satellites used to monitor the weather. Multiple spacecraft from the US, Europe, Japan and China are planning to study the asteroid before, during the after the flyby.
