‘This place is gone to the dogs…’You will find it hard to believe what I am about to tell you. The first fact is that the world has gone mad and totally ‘gone to the dogs’. The world is gone to the dogs. I like dogs, same as with people, I have liked a lot of dogs in my time, and loved a few. But there are dogs, and there are dogs.

Playwright Lou Harry and director Katherine Michelle Tanner had similar reactions when they first read the 2016 book “We Are Still Tornadoes.” They couldn’t put it down and imagined it as a play. “It was such a pleasantly and movingly digestible book, a quick read but a strong one. The movie rights also were sold but Tree Fort got permission to stage the play. Harry, who has published dozens of books and written numerous plays, said he feels like “more of a midwife of this book becoming a play. “I hope the film gets made and if it keeps the play from being staged, so be it,” he said.

I’ve ran one in Washington DC, in Cleveland, in Cornwall in the UK, and I’ve ran numerous ones around Ireland. Some of my favourite parkrun moments are (and other people mightn’t understand this!) David Nash’s collection, No Man’s Land, is filled with poems that act as monuments to absence and loss. The poems in this striking collection are notable as much for what is not present as for what is. All through the book we see landscapes changing, not being what they were or what they should be. We also see poems that grieve for loss of language, means of expression, the Irish language in particular. We see none of the things that normally populate contemporary poetry collections such as love, heartbreak, illness, grief, or parenthood.
