Novak Djokovic shows no ill effects of surgery as he strolls into round twoBy Andy Sims, PANovak Djokovic proved once again that he should never be written off after cruising to victory on Centre Court just 27 days after a knee operation. The 37-year-old’s chances of featuring at Wimbledon looked all but impossible when he went under the knife in Paris last month for surgery on a torn meniscus. But a 6-1 6-2 6-2 first-round stroll against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva demonstrated to the doubters that not only is Djokovic fit, but he is also determined to at least challenge for title number eight at the All England Club. Photo by Mike EgertonSporting a grey knee support – not exactly consistent with Wimbledon’s all-white policy – Djokovic charged through the first set in only 34 minutes. Donyell Malen’s late double steers Netherlands past Romania at Euro 2024Andy Hampson, PADonyell Malen struck twice late on as the Netherlands reached the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Romania in Munich. Romania made the brighter start with Dennis Man going close but Gakpo changed the game with his third goal of the tournament. The Liverpool forward finished well as he cut inside from the left and lashed a low right-foot shot inside Florin Nita’s near post. The Netherlands threatened more as Tijjani Reijnders had a powerful effort blocked by Radu Dragusin and Stefan De Vrij headed narrowly wide. Romania felt hard done to when play was pulled back for a foul by Denis Alibec as Nicolae Stanciu broke away but Malen finished the game with his late double.

Central banks have shown they can take forceful action to head off the most dramatic increase in inflation in a generation. To restore price stability, central banks unleashed the biggest and most synchronised global monetary policy tightening in decades. This episode has shown the value of having independent institutions outside the political process as the guardians of price stability. It also narrows central banks’ room for policy manoeuvre, making it harder to exit from stimulus measures and detangle central bank and government policies. A final lesson is that central banks alone cannot deliver a durable increase in economic growth and prosperity.

A Donegal solider is among ten men from Irish regiments who died in the first World War who will be honoured this month after their graves were located. Rededication services will take place in France and Belgium following research carried out by a group known as the war detectives. Almost half of the 1.1 million British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the first World War have no known grave. The UK ministry of defence’s war detectives squad, officially known as the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), is tasked with matching the graves with regimental diaries which record how and where men died during the war. Though the first World War ended more than a century ago, the search to identify remains has never stopped.

Officials stress that the designation of a state as a safe country of origin does not mean that a claim for asylum is inadmissible. The countries to be added to the safe list are: Brazil, Egypt, India, Malawi and Morocco. This is in addition to 10 countries already designated as safe countries of origin: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and South Africa. READ MOREThe introduction of safe country status and the consequent accelerated processing times have led to a drop in the number of applications from those countries. Applicants from Nigeria – although it is not designated a safe country – are also put in an accelerated application process.

Rishi Sunak will be campaign in the Midlands while Sir Keir Starmer is in south-east England on Monday (PA)British prime minister Rishi Sunak refuses to admit defeat, insisting his Conservative Party is still in with a shout as this Thursday’s UK general election looms. Despite Sunak’s bullishness, Labour leader Keir Starmer is expected to take the top job at 10 Downing Street, with the Tories bracing themselves for a devastating performance. A typical but bizarre narrative has played out since rain-soaked Sunak called for the UK General Election in late May, with betting scandals, bungee jumps and a Banksy stunt at Glastonbury among the headlines in recent days and weeks. Even the ever-ebullient Nigel Farage has resurfaced, pledging to lead Reform UK to glory, but distancing himself from any kind of union with the Conservatives. Change is in the air as the UK public goes to the polls for what appears to be a foregone conclusion, but one that represents an immense power shift in Britain.

Several men told me lack of understanding of their partner’s struggles during menopause had cost them the relationship. Niki Woods with her book 'The Man's Guide To Menopause' Picture: Maryanne ScottBecause although menopause happens to women, it doesn’t occur in isolation; it affects relationships, families, and workplaces. Menopause is a complex physiological and emotional transition experienced by all women – and it commonly starts far earlier than we expect. I also wanted to empower men with knowledge and skills to effectively support women emotionally and practically. I believe it’s vital to support both men and women to understand menopause, to encourage better communication, to help people understand and support each other, and to improve – maybe even save – relationships.

Heart disease patients in Ireland and across the world can look forward to better outcomes and avoiding unnecessary treatments due to artificial intelligence advances, a leading cardiologist and researcher at University of Galway has said. Professor of Interventional Cardiology William Wijns said that angiograms were routinely used to look at blood vessels, allowing doctors to check for flow blockages. But due to limitations around this form of test, it is estimated that diagnosis and treatment of patients through the cardio-angiogram can lead to the inappropriate use of stents which are used to keep arteries open but carry risks like blood clots.
