Kellie Brennan of Athlone Town during the 2024 Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup final media day at Tallaght Stadium. “I played Gaelic football when I was younger, but then I started to come up through the ranks in soccer. It’s every girl's dream to play in this,” Brennan remarked at a media day for their Women’s FAI Cup final against Shels. While last year’s FAI Cup showpiece victory over Shels was a monumental achievement for Athlone, the Midlanders weren’t prepared to stop there. Hopefully we can get them down on Sunday to support us in the Cup and we can hopefully do it.

Banks are to reveal whether Britons are benefiting from lower interest rates in their first major update since borrowing costs were cut this summer. Investors will be keen to see if July's rate cut has been passed on to mortgage and loan customers as Barclays, NatWest and Lloyd's report third quarter results this week. Barclays is set to announce earnings of £2 billion, up from £1.9 billion and NatWest £1.5 billion up from £1.3 billion. Investors will also study loan and deposit growth, any asset impairments, litigation costs and cash returns to investors. From 6 pm till 9 pm, the Old Goa Fire Services which were summoned at the place where the body was floating, i.e. near the Patto-Ribandar under construction jetty, just watched and waited for the high tide to bring the body ashore. Fire personnel informed that the Panjim Fire and Emergency Services boat had been requisitioned elsewhere. The burden is always put on the Fire and Emergency Services. Under disaster management, can’t there be coordination between the Fire and Emergency Services, the Coastal Police and the Coast Guard.

Memoir of Bernard Phelan: a 'truly terrifying story'Three very different non-fiction books feature this week, along with two Irish crime novels. You Will Die in Prison, Bernard Phelan, Eriu, €15.99This is the shocking memoir of Bernard Phelan, an Irish travel agent and bar owner resident in Paris since the 1980s. Because Phelan had travelled on his French passport, he was arrested on trumped-up charges of sedition. Eventually he was released, and this is his truly terrifying story. We think of Yeats, we think of Wilde himself and of Synge, when we remember great Irish writers of this time, but not many think of Mangan.

The AQA is piloting a numeracy test which potentially could give pupils a maths proficiency certificate, like a driving licence or a music grade, even if they never pass a GCSE in the subject, The Times reports. Mr Hughes told BBC Radio 5 Live Saturday Breakfast: “It’s not making it easier at all. I absolutely guarantee that several times today you will use your head to do various kinds of calculations. It is expected that pupils, from 14 year-olds to those in sixth-forms and further education colleges, could use a new platform to assess and improve on their real-life mathematics skills. This summer almost 186,000 teenagers over the age of 16 resat maths GCSE and 17.4% achieved a grade 4 or above.

Sunday’s strongest winds will sweep exposed parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with 70mph gusts likely. They could reach 80mph “or perhaps a fraction more” in parts of western Scotland, Mr McGivern added.
