VoteSmart is designed to guide you on that last point – on the policy positions of the parties and Independents on your ballot paper. It will bring to an end the four-and-a-half-year lifespan of the historic Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Green Party coalition government. Tanaiste Mr Martin joined some of his party’s election candidates in Dublin ahead of the formal dissolution. Speaking outside Leinster House, Mr Martin said the outgoing coalition had “weathered many significant storms and shocks”. Mr Martin also insisted he was not concerned at the prospect of having to debate with his erstwhile partner in government, Mr Harris, during the election. “I look forward to the debate because Fianna Fail will be putting forward its priorities, its policies, as we did in the last election.

As part of the Boundary Commission’s efforts to reduce breaches of county borders, much of north Co Galway has been returned from Roscommon-Galway, moving Galway East up from a three-seater to a four-seater. There are questions over who out of a crowded field of Fine Gael candidates might ensure their party holds on to the seat vacated by Mr Cannon. Mr O’Hara and the other Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael candidates will have their eyes on the last seat. Much of the county’s rural and agricultural communities are based in Galway East, meaning farming is always high on the agenda here and that vote will be crucial. While technically an issue for Galway city, the traffic congestion that has plagued Galway for years is also important, with many voters living in Galway East working in the city and dealing with gridlock that only continues to get worse.

It was a 23-22 defeat by England, the same England the All Blacks got the better of three times this year. Our TAB has Ireland as 5/3 favourites to beat the All Blacks, which seems a generous call for Ireland. The Dublin test will be a prime chance for him to show a corner has been turned. In fact, just six of the All Blacks’ starting XV in Dublin played in the Paris World Cup game last year. Three of the Irish forwards from Paris are back, and four of the Irish reserves in Paris are starting in Dublin.

The publication of the country’s first ever national strategy to counter disinformation — initially supposed to be out eight months ago — is still in doubt, as the country heads towards a general election. The National Counter Disinformation Strategy Working Group was set up by Media Minister Catherine Martin in February 2023 and various drafts have been in circulation since earlier this year. Publication of the strategy has been repeatedly pushed back, with initial Government statements that it would be out before March this year. The latter includes social media posts making erroneous claims about polling stations, voting times, and the integrity of the voting system itself. Posts on the purported event appeared on an anonymous event website, before being shared on social media platforms including TikTok and Instagram.

Patients are stuck in a loop between pharmacies and doctors trying to fill prescriptions for vital medicines which are frequently out of stock, a pharmacist has warned. Treatment for psychiatric illnesses, pain relief containing fentanyl, diabetes drug Ozempic, HRT patches for menopause, and medication for ADHD are coming up short around the country. Ozempic, a diabetes drug, is widely popular as a weight-loss drug, although it is not licensed for this in Europe. Daragh Connolly, from Haven Pharmacy Connollys in Dungarvan, said the problem was with supplies of initiation doses for diabetic patients. Some older psychiatric medicines are also short, with perhaps only 100mg capsules available when 50mg is needed.

Recognising the Pharisee withinReflecting on our Sunday Readings with Bro Joseph Wong Pak YiiNov 08, 202432nd Sunday inOrdinary Time (B)Readings: 1 Kings 17: 10-16;Hebrews 9:24-28;Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 (or 12:41-44)Why did Jesus’ words towards the scribes and pharisees repeatedly sound unsparing in the Bible, whereas He treated the prostitutes and tax collectors with much compassion? All of them were sinners whom He loved and came to redeem, but the key difference between them was the heart of repentance. Now, we may easily identify the scribes and pharisees around us, but often times, we have overlooked the pharisaic behaviour within us. In the Gospel, Jesus contrasted the scribes’ selfrighteousness to the poor widow who gave generously without pompous show of her good deeds. The scribes were self-righteous by parading their pious acts, whilst the poor widow was outpouring her love by giving all she had to live on.
