O’Shea was nervous watching Parrott play to the final whistle, but he admitted he feels this way about all the players. That strategy will probably be used against Czech Republic at the Fortuna Arena. “One of the keys to winning the game is to eliminate Parrott,” said Tomáš Holeš, the veteran Czech defender.

This ESRI report is going to make that task all the harder by creating a public narrative that retrofitting is failing – or makes little difference even when you get it done. While you can never be complacent, the reality is that deep retrofitting of our domestic buildings increased tenfold between 2019 and 2024. The latest review for the European Commission puts us as the number one country in Europe when it comes to improving domestic energy efficiency levels. It will be a shame if the ESRI report undermines that. More than half of the roughly €1 billion in revenue being raised is going back to the public as retrofitting grants.

The results of a major investigation into the business of Aughinish Alumina, published today, provide worrying evidence about how alumina produced in Co Limerick is entering the Russian military supply chain. The supply chain starts when bauxite from Africa and South America arrives on the Shannon estuary for processing into alumina. The Aughinish plant is owned by Rusal, a Russian company, which also owns smelters in Siberia to which much of the output from the Co Limerick plant is exported. Nor is it possible to prove definitively that the output of the Co Limerick plant is used in arms production. But industry experts point out that aluminium producers such as the big Russian smelters would not typically use alumina from specific suppliers in different ways.

Women are excluded from Easter processions by groups of men known as cofradías, or brotherhoods, in Spain. Every Easter across Spain groups of men known as cofradías, or brotherhoods, carry ornate religious floats through towns and villages as crowds watch. Earlier this week members of the Brotherhood of Holy Week of Sagunto voted on whether to allow women to take part in the carrying of their float. This followed growing pressure for a change to a tradition that has been observed in the eastern Mediterranean town since the late 15th century. That status gives the town access to subsidies and means it is promoted internationally as a tourist destination.

Irish wholesale electricity prices fell by almost a quarter in February from the same month last year, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) said on Monday, despite recent rises in the retail price of energy to households. Wholesale electricity prices – the prices paid by energy retailers before selling them on to households and businesses – were some 72.1 per cent lower than the peak that occurred in August 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier that year. Even before the US bombing of Iran, households were paying more for electricity in recent months. Household electricity prices were up 4.7 per cent over the 12 months to the end of February, according to the CSO’s most recent consumer price index, published earlier this month. However, producer prices for exported goods were down by 6.3 per cent over the same time period, leaving manufacturing producer prices down 5.5 per cent year-on-year.
