It was a good thing – Heimir Hallgrimsson unaware of Robbie Keane visit backlashBy Damian Spellman, PARepublic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson was unaware of the controversy surrounding Robbie Keane’s visit to the camp but says the former captain’s presence was “a good thing” for his squad. Asked about the fall-out, Icelander Hallgrimsson said initially: “I wouldn’t know. I think it is good to connect past players, the legends from the past to the present. “It was probably not what you would think a striker would say, scoring all his goals, but I think it was a really good message to the players. I think it was a good thing.”Central defender Nathan Collins revealed Keane was able to give the current generation an insight into a different era.

Central Bank figures show household deposits increased by €4.7 billion, or 3.1 per cent, in the year to end-September. Photograph: iStockThe large amount of savings in low-yielding Irish bank accounts has been described as a “missed opportunity”. It noted these movements were contributing to a slowly decreasing share of overnight deposits, which represented 87.3 per cent of the total stock of household deposits at September-end. Retail banks have been criticised for failing to increase their deposit rates in line with European Central Bank (ECB) levels while reporting big annual profits. Banks insists, however, that Irish savers have been slow to move their money out of low-yielding overnight deposit accounts and into accounts with higher interest rates.

Sinn Féin’s housing plans would 'crucify' first-time buyers, Micheál Martin claimsVivienne ClarkeFianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said Sinn Féin’s housing policy would “crucify” first-time buyers. “That’s why we’re saying to young people who are looking to buy houses, we will keep the Help To Buy scheme going until 2030. I believe there has to be a consistent level of social housing built in this country on an annual basis. “This year, we will deliver 12,000 social homes - made up of over 8,000 new builds and the rest through acquisition. Where we want to get to is about 12,000 per annum new-build social houses and do that on an annual basis.

Call for speed ramps at "very busy" Coosan NSCouncil officials have said they will look at adding speed ramps in the vicinity of Coosan National School in Athlone, after the traffic calming measures were sought by Cllr Paul Hogan during a meeting last week. Ambrose Clarke, the outgoing director of services for the Athlone Moate district, said he was aware of a number of schools which had speed ramps installed nearby in recent times. "So we'll look into that and see if there's an option (to install ramps in Coosan)." District manager Willie Ryan said there were clear benefits to adding speed ramps at schools. It was agreed that the council would consider the possibility of including the safety measures at Coosan NS as part of its works programme for 2025.

The Marist efforts were strong but it was simply a case of height, power, and speed trumping them as Coláiste Mhuire took aim at will. Goal four for Coláiste Mhuire was finished to the net by replacement, Senan Brody. Player of the match: Josh Scahill (Coláiste Mhuire): There were several contenders for Coláiste Mhuire, but Scahill was the livewire in attack who caused the most damage.

Green TD would have ‘left Government’ if land hoarding tax deferred againBy Cillian Sherlock, PAA Green Party minister has said he was willing to leave Government if a land hoarding tax was deferred in the Budget. Minister of State Ossian Smyth said the delay of the land hoarding tax in 2023 was “absolutely the wrong thing to do” in the middle of the housing crisis. A new Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT) will be charged each year on land that is zoned for residential use and has all necessary services, such as access to water, roads and lighting. The measure is designed as a policy lever to encourage the development of residential housing on any available land. The legislation to help councils and policymakers identify derelict sites for intervention was introduced by Green Party planning spokesman Steven Matthews.
