Despite the government’s huge investment in the programme, the government spends about two hundred million Ghana cedis importing these, which are supposed to be sold to the farmers at 50% of the original market price. But as a result of alleged corruption, smuggling and poor management of the scheme, farmers are not getting these fertilizers and have called for a reform of the scheme. Two years ago, a resident of Bolgatanga allegedly diverted some bags of fertilizers which were meant for farmers in the region into his private apartment for his parochial interest. They have various markets in the neighboring countries where they sell these fertilizers,” the farmers say. According to the Secretariat, Ghana lost a whopping GHS120 million from unaccounted for fertilizer, diversion of coupons and fertilizer smuggling in the 2017 and 2018 planting seasons.

He explained that if the country would sit and allow persons in power to continuously abuse their authority, leading people to perpetuate crimes, it could just be contributing to our poor performance on the global index for countries with strong press freedom presences. "Ghana's rating on the Press Freedom Index has been dipping consistently over the last 5 years. Somebody must be asking that why is that Ghana is dipping on the Press Freedom Index. And I am quite sure that such statements and the lack of action and so on have contributed to this dip," he said. Now, when somebody says beat somebody and I'll pay for it, what does it mean?

"Even in the parts of the world where we claim that the governments are authoritarian and what not, this will not be allowed to pass, but in Ghana, it passes. And here's the situation that the police is being accused for actually collaboration and protection of a murderer and nothing happens,” he said. "And then there is the case of how we handle persons in power, and how we handle persons out of power. As we speak, there are some opposition elements who are facing trial for statements they allegedly made which threatened individual security and so on. We should treat citizens as equals - the principle of the equality of citizenship is lost in our country, and I'm very deeply worried,” he said.
