But given 96% of malaria deaths occurred in Africa in 2021, most research on the trend is found there. Together, the two countries accounted for 6% of global malaria deaths in 2021. However, the numbers remain high, especially in Africa where children under 5 years old account for 80% of all malaria deaths. But those changes are probably not due to climate change, he said, adding that the rollout of insecticide-treated nets is one explanation for that shift. The bugs tend to thrive in the kind of extremes that are happening more frequently because of human-caused climate change.

Opal is a spectacular stone with unique, and beautiful reflections. In Ethiopia, deposits were discovered in 2008 in the north of the country, and it quickly the world's second-largest exporter. But this is nothing compared to the income opal could generate for the economy. What’s needed is a better legal framework, more skilled workers, private investment and better global marketing. And the government is gearing up to make those things happen: it wants mining to make up 17% of GDP.

The U.S. military command in Africa has said it conducted an airstrike in central Somalia that killed five al-Shabab militants. AFRICOM said the strike was in support of Somali National Army forces fighting al-Shabab. In August 2022, the Somali army, supported by self-mobilized local fighters, launched a military offensive that seized parts of central Somalia from the militant group. "We are expecting something that would take Somalia up to 2027 when Somalia believes we can take over to fund our security forces completely," Ali said. The United States, Turkey, Eritrea and the United Arab Emirates are among the nations training the Somali National Army.

The report which was published on Thursday said more than 204,000 battle-related deaths were recorded worldwide in active state-based conflicts during 2022, with the wars in Ethiopia and Ukraine accounting for 89% of the deaths. The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) estimates that about 81,500 battle-related deaths occurred because of the war in Ukraine, while 100,200 battle-related deaths resulted from the parallel war between the Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF” the report said. The report underlined that documenting war crimes and battle-related deaths in Ethiopia has been difficult, and “casualty figures should be understood as a conservative baseline”. It stated that 55 conflicts were recorded in 2022, eight of which crossed the 1,000 battle-related deaths threshold and were classified as wars including Ukraine and Ethiopia. In 2021, for the third consecutive year, the conflict with the most battle-related deaths occurred between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban.

Tefera highlighted that the Gross Domestic Product of the members of the bloc exceeds 30 trillion dollars, with around three billion people of the world population residing in the member countries. Joining the BRICS group would open the doors for Ethiopia to join a big market system and create an alternative political and economic system, which is not dominated by just a few world powers, he stressed. The professor specified that the BRICS not only wants to use currencies other than the dollar, but also seeks to create a world free of Western domination. Mindful of the fact that Ethiopia follows the diplomatic principle of “peaceful coexistence”, its accession would provide better diplomatic options for the country, he concluded. In recent years, countries such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Türkiye and others have shown interest in joining the body.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Moscow would "consider" returning to the Ukraine grain deal if its demands were "fully" met, saying the agreement had "lost all meaning." "The continuation of the grain deal in its current form has lost all meaning," Putin said at a government meeting. He named the "withdrawal of sanctions on supplies of Russian grain and fertilisers to world markets" as one of the main conditions. Putin said Russia had shown "miracles of poise and tolerance" by extending the deal several times. The grain deal, brokered by the UN and Turkey, had enabled the export of more than 32 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain over the last year.
