Ethiopia will work with Saudi Arabian authorities to investigate allegations made by a human rights group that hundreds of Ethiopian migrants have been killed by the kingdom's border guards, its foreign ministry said on Tuesday. A Saudi official said on Monday that the allegations made in the report published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) were "unfounded". "The Government of Ethiopia will promptly investigate the incident in tandem with Saudi Authorities," the foreign ministry statement said, emphasizing the strong relations between the two governments. "We welcome the announcement by the government of Ethiopia specifically to investigate the whole issue together with the authorities in Saudi Arabia," Commission spokesman Peter Stano told a daily press conference. U.N. officials in 2022 alleged that Saudi border guards were systematically killing migrants last year; an accusation that Saudi authorities strongly denied.

About 500 children have died from hunger in Sudan — including two dozen babies in a government-run orphanage in the capital of Khartoum — since fighting erupted in the East African country in April, a leading aid group said Tuesday. Save the Children also said that at least 31,000 children lack access to treatment for malnutrition and related illnesses since the charity was forced to close 57 of its nutrition centers in Sudan. "Never did we think we would see children dying from hunger in such numbers, but this is now the reality in Sudan," said Arif Noor, Save the Children's director for Sudan. Speaking from Sudan's White Nile state, Balde praised neighboring Chad, Egypt, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Central African Republic for opening their borders to those fleeing the fighting. In the eastern Qadarif province, at least 132 children died from malnutrition in the government-run Children's Hospital between April and July.

The United States called on its long-time ally Saudi Arabia for “a thorough and transparent investigation” into the accusations. Similarly, the French foreign ministry also urged a transparent probe and said it would raise the issue of human rights in Yemen and Saudi Arabia with the Saudi authorities.

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia plans to organise a referendum to determine the status of territory disputed by the country's Tigray and Amhara regions, the defence minister said on Tuesday. Most of those who fled the disputed area identify as Tigrayan, while the territory is currently governed by Amhara forces and administrators. The federal constitution, which was drafted by a former Tigrayan-led federal administration in 1995, recognises the lands as belonging to Tigray. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the Tigray war, which ended with a peace deal between the government and Tigrayan leaders last November. Amhara nationalists complained they were not included in the negotiations and felt betrayed by the deal's stipulation that the status of the disputed lands be resolved in accordance with the 1995 constitution.

"The Government of Ethiopia will promptly investigate the incident in tandem with the Saudi authorities," the ministry said on X, formerly known as Twitter, a day after the publication of the HRW report. A Saudi official said on Monday that the allegations in the HRW report were "unfounded". "We welcome the announcement by the government of Ethiopia specifically to investigate the whole issue together with the authorities in Saudi Arabia," spokesman Peter Stano told reporters. Last year, UN experts reported "concerning allegations" that "cross-border artillery shelling and small-arms fire by Saudi Arabia security forces killed approximately 430 migrants" in southern Saudi Arabia and northern Yemen during the first four months of 2022. In March of that year, the repatriation of Ethiopians from Saudi Arabia began under an agreement between the two countries.

The Ethiopian government said Tuesday it will investigate a report by a human rights group of killings of hundreds its nationals at the Yemen-Saudi border. The New York-based group Human Rights Watch released a report on Monday citing eyewitness accounts of attacks by border guards in Saudi Arabia using machine guns and mortars on unarmed Ethiopians trying to cross into the kingdom from Yemen. The United Nations has already questioned Saudi Arabia about its troops opening fire on migrants in an escalating pattern of attacks along its southern border with war-torn Yemen. About 750,000 Ethiopians live in Saudi Arabia, with as many as 450,000 likely having entered without authorization, according to 2022 statistics from the International Organization for Migration. Saudi Arabia, struggling with youth unemployment, has been sending thousands back to Ethiopia in concert with the Ethiopian government.

Defence Minister Abraham Belay's comments are the government's clearest to date on its plans for the disputed territory, fertile farmlands officially known as Western Tigray where some of the most intense fighting of the war took place. Most of those who fled the disputed area identify as Tigrayan, while the territory is currently governed by Amhara forces and administrators. (Photo: Human Rights Watch)Addis Abeba – The government of Ethiopia said it will “promptly investigate the incident in tandem with the Saudi Authorities” after a report published yesterday by Human Rights Watch (HRW), revealed massive allegations of killings of Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers attempting to cross the Yemen-Saudi border by Saudi border guards. A Saudi official, communicating via email with Reuters, also refuted similar claims made by UN officials in 2022 that border guards had systematically killed migrants the previous year. HRW’s report sheds light on the perilous circumstances faced by Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers who dare to traverse the Yemen-Saudi border. Surviving migrants have come forward with distressing testimonies recounting alleged abuses at the hands of Saudi border guards. Currently, Saudi Arabia is hosting approximately 750,000 Ethiopian migrants, many of whom are seeking improved economic opportunities.

Senegal repatriated on Monday from Cape Verde some forty nationals who survived a crossing which was to take them to Europe and which cost the lives of around sixty migrants, AFP journalists noted. The survivors, all men, mostly young and rescued last week aboard a canoe off Cape Verde, were brought back to the country by a Senegalese military plane which landed at the end of the afternoon. These will be buried in Cape Verde, said the Minister Delegate for Senegalese Abroad Annette Seck Ndiaye. The decision was taken in consultation with the families, said the minister delegate, who had returned from Cape Verde with her compatriots, to journalists. One of the survivors remained in Cape Verde and is treated there "because his state of health did not allow him to make the trip", said the minister delegate.
