Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blasted the European Union in a keynote speech on July 22 for pushing federalism and embracing migration and LGBT rights, while speaking highly of China as the emerging new global power. "The document suggested that I should avoid mentioning "territorial or administrative areas that are non-existent in Romania", Orban said. Balance of power shifting to ChinaIn his address, Orban highlighted that the balance of power globally has shifted and the current global political trends. The prime minister continued to criticise EU sanctions, claiming it has led to rising energy prices and did little to weaken Russia. The seven imprisoned OLF leaders (Photo: Social Media)Addis Abeba – Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for the immediate release of seven Oromo opposition figures, which it says have been arbitrarily detained by Ethiopian authorities for nearly three years solely due to their political involvement. The detainees, senior members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a previously banned political opposition group advocating for Oromo self-determination, have been held by Oromia police since 2020 and 2021, despite multiple court orders ordering their release. Laetitia Bader, Deputy Africa Director at HRW, criticized the Ethiopian law enforcement agencies for abusing the justice system through the unjust and prolonged detention of these Oromo opposition politicians. In April 2023, the Oromia police authorities transferred seven detainees from a Burayu police station and withheld information regarding their whereabouts. In view of these distressing findings, HRW has called for the immediate release of the seven detained opposition figures.

“Black Foam” by Haji Jabir, Amazon Crossing, 224 pages“Black Foam” is quite a surprise. The Falashmura were the people left behind after Israel and world Jewry succeeded in bringing nearly all of Ethiopia’s Jews – Beta Israel – to Israel. In “Black Foam,” it is suggested that with enough money, one could bribe one’s way into the emigration center in Gondar and onto the list for aliyah. (I learned about “Black Foam” from a recent episode of the podcast “Bulaq,” in which Qualey and co-host Ursula Lindsey showcase new English translations of contemporary Arabic prose and poetry. “Black Foam,” however, seems more interested in the relations between Africans of different nationalities and religions than in attacking Israel.

The one-day conference is a Meloni initiative that aims to make Italy a leader in resolving issues impacting Mediterranean nations. Meloni told the opening meeting that Western arrogance had likely stood in the way of solutions to the migrant issue. She proposed four main prongs for future cooperation: fighting criminal organizations trafficking migrants, better managing flows of migrants, supporting refugees and helping countries of origin. In her closing press conference, Meloni emphasized that there were no legal means of entry for many people who might have a case for refugee status, because quotas are filled by those who arrive illegally. A further 483 are dead or missing in Africa this year.
