With BRICS members surging to eleven soon, the block’s economy is forecasted to surpass the OECD’s block. Prime Minister Abiy claims new military and trade ties with members, though analysts argue BRICS’ main value lies in investment potential if Ethiopia can improve business. Ethiopia is the seat of AU and ECA, which BRICS countries cannot avoid in their strategy towards Africa. In terms of trade and finance, Ethiopia might benefit from the currency convertibility of trading with BRICS countries without the need of dollar. With our growing regional integration endeavours and infrastuructres in airlines, telecom and land transport, Ethiopia will become a connectivity hub for those regions.”According to PM Abiy, Ethiopia joined BRICS by its own merit.

During a January 2023 trip to Ethiopia, Annalena Baerbock, Germany's foreign minister, said it was essential to address human rights violations to enable reconciliation. It spearheaded the establishment of the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia, an independent inquiry collecting and preserving evidence of international crimes for future prosecutions under the United Nations Human Rights Council. It accepted a joint investigation by the Office of the UN high commissioner for human rights alongside the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission. More recently, the government has allowed the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to monitor abuses in northern Ethiopia. And yet, the EU knows that without building a strong foundation of evidence, there will be no meaningful justice for war crimes domestically or internationally.

Addis Ababa (AFP) – The head of Ethiopia's violence-stricken region of Amhara, which the federal government has placed under a state of emergency, has stepped down, according to an official statement reported Friday. Tension in the northern region ratcheted up this year after the end of a devastating war in the neighbouring region of Tigray that also drew in fighters from Amhara. The move triggered protests by Amhara nationalists who said it would weaken their region. The situation in Amhara is impossible to verify on the ground, as the federal authorities restrict access to the region. The Amhara region is inhabited mostly by the Amhara people, the country's second most populous ethnic group.

The potential new members include three of the world’s biggest oil producers: Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iran. South African officials pushed back against characterizations that BRICS was taking an anti-West turn under the influence of China and Russia. While Saudi Arabia had been touted as a likely new member, Iran’s inclusion wasn’t expected. Until recently, the inclusion of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE together in the same economic or political organization would have been unthinkable, as tensions escalated following the collapse of Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal. But the UAE became the first to reengage diplomatically with Iran, and Saudi Arabia and Iran announced they had reached a separate détente in March, notably with the help of Chinese mediation.

The Walter Sisulu University and North-West University in South Africa unveiled the results of their preclinical trials for a combination vaccine against tuberculosis (TB) and Covid-19. Reflecting on the revolutionary nature of this vaccine, Prof Depfenhart shared: “DNA vaccines have incredible potential due to their stability and adaptability. The key deliverable of the study, which was carried out at the high-security biosafety laboratory (BSL3) of the preclinical imaging facility of the South African Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure (SANuMeRI) housed at NECSA (South African Nuclear Energy Corporation), was survival. This novel approach, developed by Prof Depfenhart, could be groundbreaking and may well explain the vaccine’s notable efficacy against TB. Preparations for discussions with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) are underway to determine the requisite standards and protocols.
