Addis Ababa (AFP) – An accord signed a year ago between the rivals in Ethiopia's Tigray war has brought peace to the shattered region, but ignited yet another conflict in the increasingly fractured nation. The guns at last silent, the northern region of six million has begun the huge task of rebuilding. Among the worst affected are the one million people inside Tigray forced to flee fighting. Many were driven out of territory still under control of security forces from neighbouring Amhara, Tigray's rival region, which sided with the national army during the conflict. The end of fighting in Tigray has only served to spotlight the many other hotspots raging in Ethiopia, often along ethnic lines, troubling a vast and diverse country of 120 million people.

Africa-Caricom relations moving full speed ahead
Back in September 2021, Caricom and Africa held their first summit aimed at holding long talks about opportunities in trade and direct investment, air travel, and maritime links, among other areas. Delegates from both regions appeared upbeat and were encouraged by the pace of developments since the leaders met in 2021. Todd said the African bank is also helping the region “develop its own Exim bank” that would work along similar lines to its African counterpart. Commercial quantities were discovered back in 2020 and already the daily tally from two oilfields has reached about 400,000 barrels. Gil arrived in the capital of Ethiopia on Sunday from the Republic of the Congo after participating in the Three Basin Summit of Biodiversity Ecosystems and Tropical Forests. Gil met on Monday with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen, and highlighted that both parties are at an ideal stage to take a further step towards bilateral exchange. Ethiopia: Authority Drafts a Petroleum Control Bill
The Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority (EPEA) announced that a petroleum control bill aimed at regulating and overseeing the operations of oil marketing and distribution was being drafted. The bill serves to establish a structured operating system and enable legal and administrative actions against any illicit activities discovered. According to Ato Lemesa Tulu, Director of Petroleum Products Market Research at the EPEA, a comprehensive legislation to address unlawful practices related to oil marketing, transportation, and related matters has been absent until now. The oil control bill has been developed to bridge this gap and ensure that oil marketing and distribution activities are carried out in a just and transparent manner. The authority aims to present the oil control bill to the House of Peoples’ Representatives for approval within the next six months.

News: Amnesty International exposes Facebook’s role in human rights abuses in Ethiopia
The report, titled “A Death Sentence for My Father: Meta’s Contribution to Human Rights Abuses in Northern Ethiopia,” provides a distressing account of how Meta’s algorithmic systems and business practices may have contributed to the violence, particularly against people from Tigray. “Three years after its shocking failures in Myanmar, Meta has once again, through its content-shaping algorithms and data-driven business model, contributed to serious human rights abuses,” stated Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International Secretary General. Professor Meareg Amare’s story was featured on Addis Standard‘s print publication in November 2022, followed by a $2bn lawsuit filed against Facebook’s parent company, Meta, which in Nairobi, Kenya. The report concludes that, through both action and inaction, Meta actively contributed to serious human rights violations against the people of Tigray. Hours after the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on Oct. 7, Bharat Nayak, a fact-checker in the east Indian state of Jharkhand, noticed a surge of disinformation and hate speech directed at Muslims on his dashboard of WhatsApp messages. “The content is very graphic, the messaging is extreme, and it gets forwarded many times, as there is no content moderation on WhatsApp” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. REAL-WORLD HARMSFailures of content moderation are not limited to the decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict. They are a result of the hate speech online, said Marc Owen Jones, who researches disinformation in the Middle East. Yet despite heated conversations around the need for better content moderation, trust and safety is “resource-intensive, meaning that tackling the issue is a challenge for any platform,” said Yu-Lan Scholliers, head of product at Checkstep, a UK-based content moderation services firm.

Ethiopian had secured B737 MAX for Nigeria Air - Tasew
Ethiopian Airlines (ET, Addis Ababa International) had secured aircraft for Nigeria Air (NWB, Lagos), the planned joint venture national airline that remains on hold pending re-assessment by new Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and legal action by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON). In July 2022, a consortium led by Ethiopian Airlines won a tender process for a 51/49 public-private partnership (PPP) with the federal government. Relating the background, Tasew said: "Ethiopian Airlines didn't have any intention or plan to set up an airline in Nigeria. He said Ethiopian Airlines initially hesitated to assist in setting up Nigeria Air but reconsidered due to Abuja's insistence. Ethiopian Airlines submitted a proposal and was chosen by the Nigerian Ministry of Aviation to partner in establishing the national airline.
