[Source: Reuters]Ethiopian Tamirat Tola crushed the competition to win the New York City Marathon in a course record two hours, four minutes and 58 seconds, while Kenyan Hellen Obiri won the women’s race in 2:27:23. The 2022 world champion left no doubt that the win was his as he built a nearly two minute lead by the 40-kilometre mark. Swiss Marcel Hug broke the tape in 1:25:29 in the men’s wheelchair race, picking up a record-extending sixth title in New York, while his compatriot, Catherine Debrunner, won the women’s race in 1:39:32. The race capped a blockbuster year for the World Marathon Majors in which both the men’s and women’s world records were obliterated. Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum beat compatriot Eliud Kipchoge’s world record mark in Chicago last month, while Ethiopian Tigst Assefa shattered the women’s record in Berlin in September.

This madman, Abiy Ahmed, has been directly responsible for the deaths and widespread destruction impacting hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Ethiopians. Abiy Ahmed and his hooligans now find themselves in a difficult position, precisely due to their severe lack of intelligence and wisdom in finding a constructive way out. In response to their mounting losses and growing frustration, Abiy Ahmed’s army has resorted to extreme brutality and inhumanity, targeting and killing countless unarmed civilians, and committing a host of other atrocities. It will need to be completely reconstituted once Abiy Ahmed is removed from power. Every individual responsible for the killing of civilians, including Abiy Ahmed, must face justice and be held accountable for their crimes.

By Guangul TeshagerIt is perplexing and mind boggling Africa is the same land of thieves everywhere. No African country, maybe with the exception of South Africa, is ruled by democrats. Literally, Africa is ruled by thieves. In 2006, I called the American Ambassador office and asked to talk to him. To come back to the main point, we do have kleptocrats and kakistocrats in power for the last 32+ years, post Derg era.

However, he was at pains to point out that the government’s criticism of the report was not intended to muzzle the EHRC. The government’s attempt to pour cold water on the report, however, is fraught with flaws that subject it to legitimate criticisms. The methodology EHRC uses to gather evidence and investigate human rights violations has been recognized as being on par with international standards. The government’s denial of documented atrocities without offering any proof to the contrary is a troubling development for it demonstrates an apparent absence of the desire and willingness to foster accountability. This requires of the government to forsake its go-to strategy of denialism to duck responsibility.

There are concerns over the recent escalation of abductions and attacks being carried out by armed groups in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. Development Diaries reports that the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO), in a statement, said armed groups have been engaging in disappearances, torture, arbitrary arrests, and other forms of abuse. According to EHRCO, abductees often endure torture, cruel treatment, and detainment under inhumane conditions, constituting severe crimes against human dignity. This demonstrates a failure to adequately protect human rights and ensure security. The convention clearly defines enforced disappearance as a violation of human rights and mandates that states hold perpetrators legally accountable.
