World C’ships Silver Medalist Daniel Ebenyo, Rio Olympic Champion Almaz Ayana To Headline Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2023
New Delhi: Kenya’s 10,000m World Championships silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo and 2017 Delhi half-marathon victor Almaz Ayana (Ethiopia) will headline the preliminary elite athletes in the men’s and women’s categories at the 18th Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race, here on October 15. The USD 268,000 prize money will see tens of thousands of amateurs join the world’s best elites on one of the fastest courses in the world. Ebenyo, the World Championships silver medalist, who finished sixth in the World cross-country championships held in Bathurst (Australia) in early 2023 already posted a personal best time of 59:04 at the half-marathon distance last year in Manama. The timing is very close to the Delhi course record of 58:53 and hence is coming into the Delhi Half Marathon with high expectations. In the women’s race, Ayana will have major competition from her young colleague Betelihem Afenigus.

Mary Mishler
Mary Kathryn Mishler, 102, died Thursday, September 7, at Greencroft Health Care. She is survived by four sons, John (Phyllis) Mishler of Goshen, Robert (Carol) Mishler of Singers Glen, Virginia, Don (Nina Newburn) Mishler of Goshen, and Dennis (Pattie) Mishler of Brownsburg, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Nathan Mishler, Rob Mishler, Annie Springer, Mary Kathryn Mishler II, Jade Madrid, Jackie Brewer, and Andrew Mishler; three stepgrandchildren, Anna Parker, John and Lonnie Newburn; seven great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren. Dorsa and Mary helped to lay the foundation for the hospital in Nazareth, which remains in operation. Mary was an active and enthusiastic member of Prairie Street Mennonite Church for over seventy years. Our Mom, Mary Kathryn Diller Mishler, was a "force of nature."

Ethiopia completes final filling of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
On Sunday, Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed (pictured above) announced that the fourth and final filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was complete in a move that was immediately denounced by Egypt as a violation of international law. The two countries have been engaged in a long-running dispute over the dam, which Ethiopia says is vital for its power needs but Egypt fears could limit its access to Nile waters. The Nile contributes 90% of Egypt’s fresh water and underpins its irrigation and power generation. Ethiopia began to generate electricity from the project two years ago and is already selling power to Djibouti, Sudan; and Kenya. “Affordable electricity is a game changer and driver of accelerated development which is much needed for Ethiopia,” said Chandria.

Ethiopia, China Strengthening Ties Through Cooperation in Technology Education
Addis Ababa, September 12/2023 (ENA) Ethiopia and China have been strengthening their ties by increasing their cooperation in education of technologies through Luban Workshop, Chines Tianjin University of Technology and Education said. The workshop was established by the Chinese Tianjin University of Technology and Education (TUTE), under the guidance of the Ministry of Education of China. The Luban workshop in Addis Ababa serves not only Ethiopia but also for East Africa region too, it was indicated. During the visit the university officials gave briefings about the university and its cooperation with other countries through the Luban workshop project. Tianjin University of Technology and Education is a college that was established in China in 1979, its main goal is to train teachers for vocational education.

Egypt flags concern as Ethiopia fills Nile dam reservoir - News Today
Cairo, Sept 12: Egypt has said that Ethiopia’s filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) reservoir on the Blue Nile river without a consensus with Egypt and Sudan, the two downstream countries, is a violation of the Declaration of Principles, a previously signed tripartite deal. On Sunday, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on social media X, formerly known as Twitter, the completion of the fourth and final filling of the GERD reservoir. “This is a violation by Ethiopia of the Declaration of Principles signed by the three sides in 2015,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “This move and its negative effects place a burden on the resumed negotiations, which have been set for four months to conclude,” the ministry said. Ethiopia started to build the GERD in 2011 and expects the giant hydropower project to generate more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity, but Egypt and Sudan have been worried that it might reduce their proportion of Nile water.

Sister Medhin Tesfay from Ethiopia, pictured with Trócaire CEO Caoimhe de Barra, has been presented with the Trócaire ‘Romero International Award’ in recognition of her extraordinary courage and commitment to the transformative and life-saving work of the Daughters of Charity in Ethiopia for nearly three decades. Sister Medhin Tesfay was presented with the Trócaire 'Romero International Award' by Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin at an event in Belfast last week to mark the charity's 50th anniversary. She thanked the people of Northern Ireland for their support of not just the Daughters of Charity but many other partner organisations since Trócaire was founded fifty years ago. Trócaire has worked with the Daughters of Charity since 1990. The work undertaken by the Sisters includes supporting education, health, emergency response, and economic and livelihoods supports particularly to women.

WestJet Flight Circles Vancouver: Not Continuing to Toronto
For nearly two hours, a WestJet flight from Vancouver to Toronto has been circling around its origin point, with the flight not expecting to continue onwards to its destination. WS714 is a routine flight between Vancouver and Toronto, and is being operated by C-GZWS, one of the carrier’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft. As per data from Planespotters.net, C-GZWS is a 18.3 year old airframe that was delivered to WestJet back in June 2005. UPDATE #4 @ 2325 UK time – WestJet flight WS714 is on final approach into Vancouver Airport, having taken the decision not to continue onwards to Toronto. Egypt condemns Ethiopia’s filling of Nile Grand Renaissance Dam as illegal
NAIROBI: Ethiopia announced on Sunday it has filled its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile, the source of a long-running water dispute with downstream Egypt and Sudan. Egypt and Sudan fear the massive $4.2-billion dam will severely reduce the share of Nile water they receive and have repeatedly asked Addis Ababa to stop filling it until they have all reached agreement on how it should work. “It is with great pleasure that I announce the successful completion of the fourth and final filling of the Renaissance Dam,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad said on X, formerly Twitter. Egypt’s foreign ministry condemned as “illegal” the news that Ethiopia had filled its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile. Egypt, which is already suffering from severe water scarcity, sees the dam as an existential threat because it relies on the Nile for 97 per cent of its water needs.
