Photo by Suo Takekuma-Pool/Getty ImagesAs a researcher in international relations and conflict resolution, I have watched as African countries have been courted by international powers, partly because of sea trade routes. Africa’s sea trade routes are of strategic and economic importance for major powers like China and the U.S. Domestic turmoilIn addition to emulating Russia and China, the timing and riskiness of Abiy’s maritime motivations warrant scrutiny, especially given Ethiopia’s ongoing internal strife. In addition, Abiy’s attempts to emulate global powers like China and Russia and impose its will through force carries its own risks. China and Russia have the military might to enforce their geopolitical ambitions, a luxury that Ethiopia does not have.

The sources described this as “a noteworthy expression of confidence in both the negotiations and the mediation team”. Addis Standard reported, last week quoting diplomatic sources, that senior government officials are “expected to join if the talks progress to a signing of an agreement”. The “positive outcome” of these meetings helped progress to the talks between senior military officials of the two sides. IGAD hopes that the ongoing talks and mediation efforts result in sustainable solutions, Nuur said. Although both sides acknowledged positive progress, the dialogue ended without an agreement.

SA's biggest mobile operator Vodacom reported on Monday its acquisition of Vodafone Egypt, the largest acquisition in its history, helped lift revenue over a third to about R73 billion in its half-year to end-September. Excluding this, group service revenue grew 7.9%, the group reported, while headline earnings per share declined 4.2%, largely attributable to a start-up loss in Ethiopia, higher interest rates, as well as the effects of a deferred tax asset recognised in Tanzania in the prior year. The group cut its dividend just over a tenth to 305c per share, about a R6.34 billion payout for a group valued at about R213 billion on the JSE. In late morning trade, Vodacom's shares slipped 5% and have fallen by almost 16% in the last year.

Much-awaited talks between the Ethiopian government and the Oromo Liberation Front (OLA) rebel group have resumed in Tanzania, diplomatic sources have told BBC Afaan Oromoo. Significantly, OLA commander Kumsa Diriba has joined Ethiopian government and military officials in the talks for the time, the sources added. A previous round of talks between the OLA and the government ended without agreement, and fighting continued. Both the Ethiopian military and the OLA - which advocates "self-determination" for the vast Oromia region - have long been accused of gross human rights violations, which they always deny. Human rights groups say the conflict in Oromia is ‘’hidden’’ from the international community, and urge the international community to step in to help end what they call Ethiopia's "forgotten’’ conflict.

EEP Corporate Communications Director Moges Mekonen told the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) that the country has reached the total production of 404 MW electric power from Wind power. He noted that many citizens are getting electricity from the wind power plants that have been built so far. Accordingly, the combined generating capacity of Ashegoda, Adama I and II, and Aysha II wind power plants has reached 404 megawatts, he added. Wind power is more reliable and cost-effective than hydro-power generation since the water level of dams decreases during dry seasons, he noted.
