The two-year career development program aims to grow a pool of confident and capable mid-career African women to lead policy changes to improve African smallholders’ livelihoods, particularly women. Why the GRASP Fellowship? A new report published by FAO this year, The Status of Women in Agrifood Systems, reveals that whilst there has been some progress, substantial gender inequalities in agrifood systems persist. The 50 women selected for the GRASP Fellowship will receive customized training in mentoring, advanced leadership skills, negotiations skills, gender in agricultural policy, and masterclasses on policy processes. The trio will be supported to participate in structured mentoring programs to foster knowledge sharing and development of Policy Innovation Projects that will provide hands-on practical experience in collaborating toward gender-responsive policy development.

The headquarters of the National Bank of Ethiopia (Photo: Capital Finance International)Addis Abeba – The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has approved strategic foreign direct investment initiatives to establish offshore accounts. The central bank aims to attract strategic investors across various sectors that can provide much-needed public goods and create new streams of foreign currency flows into Ethiopia. These projects will receive preferential treatment in three areas: the opening of offshore accounts, currency convertibility guarantees, and enhanced debt-to-equity ratios. Moreover, the foreign currency convertibility guarantee grants strategic investment projects a faster pathway to currency convertibility and offers them a guarantee that surpasses all other foreign currency claims, except for sovereign debt claims. However, the foreign currency convertibility guarantee is only accessible once the FDI strategic investor has exhausted all avenues for purchasing foreign currency from commercial banks.

The British Museum is facing calls from one of its own former curators to return sacred tablets to Ethiopia. “Following an undertaking given by the British Museum, nobody but priests of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church ever will.”It has been argued that the British Museum Act of 1963 prevents treasures housed in museums from being given away unless in specific circumstances, such as when they are “unfit to be retained”. The Tabots are among artefacts seized by the British in the 1868 Battle of Magdala. The British Museum Act restricts their ability to hand back almost every item in the collection, but not the Tabots. “The Tabots can be released now without a change in the Act, simply by the trustees recognising they are unfit to be retained.
