Addis Abeba — Ongoing negotiations between the Ethiopian government and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in Dar es salaam are showing "positive progress" sources close to the mediation team revealed to Addis Standard. Addis Standard reported, last week quoting diplomatic sources, that senior government officials are "expected to join if the talks progress to a signing of an agreement". The "positive outcome" of these meetings helped progress to the talks between senior military officials of the two sides. IGAD hopes that the ongoing talks and mediation efforts result in sustainable solutions, Nuur said. Although both sides acknowledged positive progress, the dialogue ended without an agreement.

In confrontational language, Abiy all but threatened conflict should Ethiopia be denied what he called the country’s intrinsic right to waterway expansion. Abiy’s comments come at a time when Ethiopia is in a period of soul-searching, caught between the paths of democracy and authoritarianism. Africa’s Ties with the Major PowersAs a researcher in international relations and conflict resolution, I have watched as African countries have been courted by international powers, partly because of sea trade routes. Africa’s sea trade routes are of strategic and economic importance for major powers like China and the U.S. In addition, Abiy’s attempts to emulate global powers like China and Russia and impose its will through force carry their own risks.

Rebels from Ethiopia's Oromiya region said Monday they were in Tanzania for a second round of talks with the Ethiopian government to try to end decades of fighting. The negotiations come more than six months after a first round of discussions between the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and Ethiopia's government ended without an agreement. The conflict in recent years has killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands in Ethiopia's most populous region. The OLA is an outlawed splinter group of the Oromo Liberation Front, a formerly banned opposition party that returned from exile after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed — himself an Oromo — took office in 2018. Oromiya, which surrounds Addis Ababa, the capital, is home to Ethiopia's largest ethnic Oromo group and more than a third of the country's 110 million people.

MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) — A small plane overshot the runway while landing at a Texas airport over the weekend and struck a car driving along a nearby road, injuring one person, authorities said. Video shows the propeller plane smash through a fence during an emergency landing in the Dallas suburb of McKinney on Saturday. It then bounced and skidded onto the road, losing a wheel and colliding with a silver sedan that was driving perpendicular to the single-engine plane’s path. The flight originated in Midland, a Texas oilpatch city 330 miles (531 kilometers) west of Dallas, and had been attempting an emergency landing at the Aero Country Airport, the fire department said. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash.

Group service revenue grew 42.2% to 59.3 billion rand, thanks to the acquisition of Vodafone Egypt and rand depreciation against a basket of international currencies. Vodafone Egypt contributed 16 cents to HEPS and 14.3 billion rand to group service revenue, Group CEO Shameel Joosub said. Excluding the contribution of Vodafone Egypt, group service revenue growth was 7.9% or 4.1% on a normalised basis, supported by a resilient performance in South Africa, he added. In South Africa, its largest market, investments to keep the network running during power cuts helped lift service revenue by 4%.
