UN experts say Ethiopia’s conflict and Tigray fighting left over 10,000 survivors of sexual violence
GENEVA (AP) — U.N.-backed human rights experts say war crimes continue in Ethiopia despite a peace deal signed nearly a year ago to end a devastating conflict that has also engulfed the country’s Tigray region. The violence has left at least 10,000 people affected by rape and other sexual violence — mostly women and girls. The violence erupted in November 2020, centering largely — though not exclusively — on the northern Tigray region, which for months was shut off from the outside world. Citing consolidated estimates from seven health centers in Tigray alone, the commission said more than 10,000 survivors of sexual violence sought care between the start of the conflict and July this year. The commission said it knows of only 13 completed and 16 pending military court cases addressing sexual violence committed during the conflict.

Military Leaders of 3 West African Countries Sign a Security Pact
The military leaders of three West African countries – Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – signed a mutual defense pact deal over the weekend. The junta leaders signed the Liptako-Gourma Charter, establishing the Alliance of Sahel States. The pact is named after the region where the three country’s borders meet. All three are facing threats from jihadists. Each of the countries has undergone coups since 2020.

African Development Bank Approves $104 Million For Ethiopia's Eastern Power Transmission Project
The African Development Bank Group approved $104 million in financing to the Ethiopian government for the financing of a transmission project to improve power supply in the eastern part of the country. The financing includes a $52 million grant from the African Development Fund, the Bank Group’s concessional lending arm and a $52 million soft loan drawn from Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund under the Korea – Africa Energy Investment Framework Agreement. The agreement was signed in June 2021 between the African Development Bank and the Government of the Republic of Korea with the main objective of contributing to sustainable economic and social development and promoting economic cooperation in African member countries. Batchi Baldeh, the Director of Power Systems Development of the Bank, said the project would improve access to clean, reliable electricity supply by increasing the capacity of the power grid in eastern Ethiopia. The project will involve the construction of 157 kilometres of 400-kilovolt double-circuit transmission lines and associated substations at Harar, Jijiga and Fafem.

A research study published by the Population Council in 2022 has shed light on the alarming conditions faced by child domestic workers. The violence against domestic workers has intensified in recent times due to various disturbing news reports of domestic workers harming or even causing the deaths of children under their care. Although the proclamation was legislated to govern worker-employer relations, it is not yet applicable to the contracts of domestic workers.

Ethiopia ‘s Gedeo Cultural landscape Become World heritage site
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has registered Ethiopia’s Gedeo cultural landscape as a world heritage. The registration of Gedeo Cultural Landscape was announced on Sunday at the 45th extended session of the World Heritage Committee being underway in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the presence of Ethiopian Minister of Tourism Nasise Chale, the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported. According to the ministry, following the entry of Gedeo cultural landscape’ entry into UNESCO’s heritage site, the number of UNESCO-inscribed cultural and natural heritages in Ethiopia has reached 10, the 100th in Africa. The Gedeo cultural landscape lies along the eastern edge of the Main Ethiopian Rift, on the steep escarpments of the Ethiopian highlands. The World Heritage Committee meets once a year, and consists of representatives from 21 of the States Parties to the World Heritage Convention elected by their General Assembly for a four-year term.

The attack, officials said, targeted the convoys traveling between Yeed and Wajid towns in the country as they moved from El Barde. Ethiopian troops have bases in Wajid and Huddur, some of the towns which are frequently under Al-Shabaab attacks. At the time of the attack, sources said, local troops were accompanying the troops. A senior government official confirmed the incident in confidence, noting that the militants targeted the troops who were clearing supply routes in the region following the Al-Shabaab blockade.

Ethiopian forces engaged in fierce clashes with al Shabaab fighters near the town of Rab Dhuure in western Somalia on Sunday morning, local residents said. At around 9 a.m. (0600 GMT) local residents heard large explosions followed by a heavy near the town of Rab Dhuure in Bakool region, around 20 km (12 miles) from the Ethiopia border. Al Shabaab claimed to have ambushed a large convoy of Ethiopian troops, who are operating in the area as part of regional efforts to wipe out the al Qaeda-affiliated group. “It was a fierce fighting with shells and other weapons but we don’t know the details,” said Fatuma Ali, who lives in Rab Dhuure. In February Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya agreed to begin what they described as “search and destroy” operations against al Shabaab, in addition to the African Union-mandated peacekeeping force, which is expected to leave Somalia by the end of next year.

Al-Shabaab militants kill over 160 Ethiopian soldiers
