“We are always hungry.”The drought is one of the worst in recent memory, but it is just the latest crisis to hit Tigray. Across Ethiopia, one in six of the 120 million population need food aid because of drought, conflict and rising inflation. “We would not be seeing this level of need without the suspension.”Aid agencies resumed food aid deliveries in December after reforms were put in place to stop theft. These included putting GPS trackers on food trucks and removing Ethiopian officials from the distribution of humanitarian grain. In Tigray, just 14% of people targeted by NGOs for food aid last month had received any by 21 January.

Anthony IzaguirreAssociated PressA special election in the suburbs of New York to replace disgraced former Rep. George Santos could offer clues about the mindset of suburban voters everywhere as 2024 election contests ramp up across the country. “This is a big concern for my district,” Pilip said. He had a comfortable victory in his last race in the district in 2020, defeating Santos, then a relatively unknown Republican. Another question that has loomed over the race has been whether the district will exist in its current form for much longer. The ruling was a major win for Democrats in the state who have angled for more favorable congressional districts.

Westminster Abbey (Dean and Chapter of Westminster)A sacred Ethiopian tablet looted at the height of empire could be returned to Africa after being held for years in Westminster Abbey. It would put pressure on the British Museum - which has several similar artefacts known as Tabots – to return their items. He said: “This would pile pressure on the British Museum to follow suit. The abbey and the museum have agreed the tabots are too sacred to study or display. The tabots kept in the British Museum are not displayed and it says its “long-term ambition” is to lend them to a UK-based Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

The U.S. is calling for an investigation into an alleged massacre of civilians in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, where a local rights group says more than 80 people were killed last week following clashes between soldiers and armed groups. Rights monitors have documented a range of human rights abuses by government forces during the conflict, including alleged extra-judicial killings. On Tuesday, the Ethiopia Human Rights Council said it had received information “showing that massive human rights violations were committed” during fighting in Merawi on Jan. 29. The rights group said the killings “were conducted by moving from house to house” during searches. Last week, Ethiopia’s parliament voted to extend a state of emergency in the Amhara region in an attempt to quash the Fano rebellion.

Ras Tafari’s famous European diplomatic tour, which took him to Rome and other European capitals, occurred during a time when Ethiopia was striving to assert its sovereignty on the global scene and in the African continent that was under colonial domination. Kevork Nalbandian, who served as its conductor, composed the Ethiopian national anthem, which remained in use from 1925 to 1974. Boris Adjemian, a French historian of Armenian descent, explores the journey of the Armenian diaspora in Ethiopia, extending his focus to include the entirety of the community within the country and its economic and political contributions. He highlights how the Negus’s brass band was a constant presence, tirelessly performing in all conditions, regardless of rain or shine, and enduring the relentless heat of the Addis Ababa highlands. From the book, we gain insight into how the brass band was strategically utilized to discreetly communicate Ethiopian diplomatic messages during international gatherings.

(LUKE TRESS / New York Jewish Week) — One candidate is an Israeli-American Orthodox Jew born in Ethiopia. Amid the Israel-Hamas war, the candidates’ support for Israel has emerged as a major focus of the campaign. Despite Pilip’s Israel bonafides, Suozzi has pitched himself as the more reliable defender of Israel in the race. Suozzi defeated Santos in the 2020 election, when the Republican, like Pilip, was also a lesser-known challenger of color. Her campaign did not make her available for an interview with the New York Jewish Week.
