The shadow of George Santos, the unpopular truth-indifferent Republican who previously held the seat, hangs over the race, too. New York City’s cavernous, tent-style migrant shelter at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens Village sits within the House district. “The migrant issue is a very big issue,” Suozzi said Wednesday. “It’s pretty clear that from the Republican side, the immigration issue is dominating,” said Steven Cohen, a professor of public affairs at Columbia University. Suozzi, who left Congress for a doomed run for governor, finished his third term representing Long Island a year ago.

omersukrugoksu/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed dismissed reports saying people were dying of hunger in his country, but allowed that people “may have died” due to malnutrition-associated illnesses. “There are no people dying due to hunger in Ethiopia,” Ahmed told lawmakers in Parliament on Tuesday. There have been at least 351 recorded hunger-related deaths in Tigray, with an additional 44 deaths recorded in Amhara. The region is still reeling from a devastating two-year civil war which saw the Ethiopian federal government and allied forces engaged in a deadly conflict with Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF, forces in Northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region. In March 2023 the United Nations and the U.S. suspended food aid to Ethiopia’s Tigray region following a scandal involving the theft of humanitarian grain.

This instability means there is great potential for this conflict to spread, something which already seems to be happening. This area is vital for trade, with an estimated 12% of global trade passing through the Red Sea. Since Jan. 11, strikes against the Houthis have been primarily conducted by the American and British militaries in an attempt to allow for regular trade in the Red Sea to continue. Furthermore, three American troops were killed and 30 were injured in a drone strike by an Iraqi militia backed by Iran on an American base in Jordan Jan. 28. In response to these attacks, strikes were conducted in Syria and Iraq against Iranian-backed militias Feb. 2, a major escalation in direct American involvement.

One of the wounded was a student at Kenya’s Multimedia University who was attacked by the hyenas late Monday on a road that borders the Nairobi National Park in Ongata Rongai. Students from the university disrupted traffic there Tuesday as police used tear gas to disperse them. “The university is not safe because we are near the national park,” said Ochieng Kefah, a student at Multimedia University, who was among the protesters. KWS’ Problem Animal Management Unit team promptly put down one hyena and moved to identify any surrounding hyena dens. The guidelines were released in January, after 10-year-old Dennis Teya was attacked and killed in a field in Kiambu County, north of Nairobi.

Only a small fraction of needy people in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region are receiving food aid, according to an aid memo seen by The Associated Press, more than one month after aid agencies resumed deliveries of grain following a lengthy pause over theft. WFP said it “is now working at pace to deliver food assistance to up to 3 million” in Ethiopia’s Tigray, Afar, Amhara and Somali regions. The United Nations and the United States halted food aid for the Tigray region in March 2023 because of a massive scheme by Ethiopian officials to steal humanitarian grain. The agency said it has “limited food stocks” in Ethiopia and urgently needs $142 million for its operations. Last week, The Associated Press reported that aid has been slow to reach those who need it following the lifting of the suspension.
