The United Nations is 'ready' to assist Bangladesh in conducting an inquiry into the violence and fatalities which occurred during protests against quotas reserved for government jobs, reports bdnews24.com. Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, made the comment while responding to a question at a press briefing on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged the United Nations and other international bodies for cooperation in the investigation. "We want a proper and thorough investigation into the incidents and to ensure that those responsible are punished," she added at an event in Dhaka.

DHAKA, Aug 1, 2024 (BSS) - Different organizations, including Sector Commanders Forum-Muktijudda 71, Muktijoddha Oikya Parishad, Chhatra Sangram Parishad, Amra Muktijoddhar Santan and Gourab 71, today congratulated the government for banning the politics of defeated evil forces of '71 -- Jamaat-Shibir. Sector Commanders Forum-Muktijudda 71 said that the International Criminal Tribunal has already termed the group as a war criminal and terrorist group. The government alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Chhatra Shibir were involved in recent widespread anarchy and violence, it added. Leaders of Muktijoddha Oikya Parishad called for immediate closure of business and establishments of Jamaat-Shibir. Amra Muktijoddhar Santan President Md Sajjad Hossain and its General Secretary Rasheduzzaman Shahin in a statement said the decision to ban Jamaat-Shibir to protect the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh is very bold.

CAIRO,Aug 1, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Egyptian opposition figure Yahya Abdelhadi was detained for questioning Wednesday, according to prominent lawyer Khaled Ali, two years after he received a presidential pardon. Ali was informed by authorities late on Wednesday that Abdelhadi had been taken to state security prosecution headquarters, "to begin questioning", he wrote on Facebook. The lawyer had earlier posted that the veteran opposition figure was forcibly taken from a car on a busy Cairo street "by a number of individuals in civilian clothing" who "kidnapped him to an unknown location". A critic of Sisi's administration, Abdelhadi had been a key figure in the Kefaya (Enough) movement that helped topple longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Human rights activists estimate Cairo still holds tens of thousands of political prisoners, many of them in brutal conditions.

While discussing the move, Dujarric said the UN is ‘ready’ to provide assistance at the Bangladesh government's request. A large number of lives were lost as the violence escalated in the following days from Jul 16 to Jul 21. Several human rights organisations and coalitions, including the United Nations, have condemned the fatalities and demanded an impartial, transparent and fair investigation into the deaths.
