Bar Council condemns destruction of govt establishments
DHAKA, July 28, 2024 (BSS) - Bangladesh Bar Council members today strongly condemned the destruction of key government establishments including metro-rail, BTV Bhaban, Setu Bhaban, Department of Disaster Management and countrywide subversive acts and atrocities. 147 killed in quota protest clashes, says home minister
“So far, our initial count says that 147 people were killed,” he said at the Secretariat on Sunday in response to a question. This is the first time the government has released an official death toll since violence sparked surrounding the protests on Jul 16. The following day, reports said that six people were killed in clashes in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Rangpur. Students from private universities, schools and colleges took to the streets in solidarity with the quota movement that day. The death toll began to tick up.

Accused of bribing MPs, Colombia's intelligence chief resigns
BOGOTA, July 27, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Colombia's intelligence chief, a close ally of President Gustavo Petro, resigned Friday after being accused by prosecutors of bribing lawmakers to speed up the passage of bills through parliament. Petro wrote on the X social network that he had accepted "the resignation" of Carlos Ramon Gonzalez. "His position as head of civil intelligence is incompatible with any judicial investigation," he added. The two accused said they were willing to strike a deal and give information to prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence. Investigations have been opened into current Minister of Finance Ricardo Bonilla and former Interior Ministry chief Fernando Velasco, authorities said.
