418 BGB platoons, 150,000 Ansars deployed for first phase of Upazilla polls
Bangladesh has deployed 418 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh during the first phase of the Upazila council polls to maintain law and order in the constituencies going to the polls. Twenty-two Upazilas will use electronic voting machines for the polls, while the others will use paper ballots. For the first time, around 94 platoons (2,820 personnel), of armed Ansar-VDP members are working in coordination with the police mobile teams and striking teams. About two thousand other members of the force, including officials and employees, are performing duties at the field level to supervise the deployments. All of them will be deployed for the five days from May 6 to May 10.

Sundarbans fire: Vigilant monitoring to continue for another two days
The Forest Department will continue monitoring fire-affected areas in Sundarbans for an additional two days as emerging smoke was detected in several locations on Monday after bringing the fire under control. Mihir Kumar Doe, forest conservator of the Khulna region, said the fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon was brought under control, UNB reported. According to bdnews24.com, water is being sprayed wherever plumes of smoke can be seen at Amarbuniain. Meanwhile, a specialised three-member committee, formed by the Forest Department, has started works to ascertain the fire's cause and the full extent of environmental damage. The committee will submit a detailed report with recommendations within ten working days.

Primary schools to resume normal ops today
Staff Reporter :The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has confirmed that all primary schools will resume normal operations from Tuesday, May 7th, 2024. A circular signed by Senior Information Officer Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin was issued on Monday, outlining the return to normalcy. Schools initially reopened on April 28th but were forced to close again due to the continued heat. With recent rainfall bringing a much-needed reprieve from the heat, schools are now deemed safe to return to their standard operations. “On Monday, the Sylhet, Chattogram, Mymensingh, and Dhaka Divisions saw more rainfall,” said meteorologist Monowar Hosasin on Monday evening.
