SYDNEY, May 9, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Australia and Tuvalu said Thursday they have agreed to launch a landmark climate and security pact this year, after smoothing over the Pacific island's sovereignty misgivings. The pact also commits Australia to defending Tuvalu in the face of natural disasters, health pandemics and "military aggression", but only upon its request for aid. It is being pursued at a time of heightened concern among Western allies about China's expanding security ties with Pacific island states. But Tuvalu's government had raised concerns about a clause saying it must "mutually agree" with Australia on any security or defence deal with other countries. Before the treaty enters into force, Tuvalu and Australia said they would submit it to further parliamentary scrutiny and public consultation.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Head has scored 533 runs in 11 IPL matches so far, with only Virat Kohli (542) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (541) above him, and the 30-year-old's aggressive approach has marked him out as one to watch at the June 1-29 World Cup. "Whenever you're playing, you want to be as consistent as you can, you want to be getting runs. It's nice to be playing well (but) that's not going to guarantee anything in the West Indies," Head told reporters. "I'm very pleased I was able to play spin tonight and the things I'm working on in training are somewhat working at the moment. But I'm trying to stay relaxed as I have done for the last couple of years and be ready to go."

I first moved to Baltimore City in 1989 for work, and have been here ever since. Each tried to address violent crime with a variety of approaches and, at best, temporary results. I recently saw the documentary “The Body Politic” at the Senator Theatre, which follows Mayor Scott’s first years in office and his approach to addressing violent crime. The film and Mayor Scott also spoke of the value of therapy, which many offenders could benefit from. My endorsement will not have an impact, but I wholeheartedly endorse Mayor Brandon Scott for Mayor.

REUTERSChina's exports and imports returned to growth in April after contracting in the previous month, customs data showed on Thursday, signalling an encouraging improvement in demand at home and overseas in a boost to a shaky economic recovery. The weak domestic demand led to deflationary pressure, which boosts China's export competitiveness," said Zhang Zhiwei, chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management. China has set an economic growth target for 2024 of around 5%, which many analysts say will be a challenge to achieve without much more stimulus. Chinese exporters had a tough time for most of last year as soaring interest rates weighed on overseas demand. Analysts say Chinese exporters are continuing to slash prices to maintain sales abroad amid the weak domestic demand conditions.
