STOCKHOLM (AP) — Three scientists won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work on tiny quantum dots. The tiny part of each atom races around the center and is fundamental to virtually everything: chemistry, physics, our bodies and our gadgets. On Monday, Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. The chemistry prize means Nobel season has reached its halfway stage. In addition to the money, winners receive an 18-carat gold medal and diploma when they collect their Nobel Prizes at the award ceremonies in December.

At least 23 Indian soldiers missing in flash flood: army
GUWAHATI, India, Oct 4, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - The Indian army said Wednesday that 23 soldiers were missing after a powerful flash flood caused by intense rainfall tore through a valley in the mountainous northeast Sikkim state. "Due to sudden cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim, a flash flood occurred in the Teesta River... 23 personnel have been reported missing and some vehicles are reported submerged under the slush," the army said in a statement. The remote area lies close to India's border with Nepal, and Lhonak Lake lies at the base of a glacier in the snowy peaks that surround Kangchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain. Flash floods are common during the monsoon season, which begins in June and normally withdraws from the Indian subcontinent by the end of September. United orders 110 new planes from Boeing, Airbus
NEW YORK, Oct 4, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - United Airlines announced Tuesday it had ordered a total of 110 new planes from Boeing and Airbus, and secured options to purchase 90 more, in a major deal signaling confidence in the aviation sector. The US airline said in a statement it had ordered 50 Boeing 787-9 and 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft, with deliveries due to begin in 2028. The firm said it had converted previous options and purchase rights into "firm orders" for the 50 787-9 planes from Boeing, for delivery between 2028 and 2031. It did the same with the 60 A321neo aircraft from Airbus, for delivery between 2028 and 2030. United also announced it had secured new options for 50 more Boeing 787s and purchase rights for an additional 40 A321neos from Airbus "at the end of the decade."

Freshman Victor Stollinger finished in ninth place overall after carding 216 over the course of the invite. This is Debusschere’s second time placing in the top 20 of an invitational this season after a ninth place finish at the Cornell Invitational on Sept. 10-11. The team wraps up its fall season this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, PA, from Sunday, Oct. 8 to Tuesday, Oct. 11. Last season, the team placed seventh overall at this invitational.

The prime minister earlier reached London, the capital city of the United Kingdom from Washington DC, on September 30 by a British Airways aircraft. In London from September 30 to October 3, Sheikh Hasina was accorded a reception by expatriate Bangladeshi community. 13 dengue patients die, 2,799 hospitalised in 24 hrs
DHAKA, Oct 3, 2023 (BSS) - A total of 13 dengue patients died and 2,799 were admitted to different hospitals in the country during the last 24 hours till 8 am today. "During the period, 682 dengue patients were hospitalised in Dhaka city while 2,117 were admitted to different hospitals outside the capital city," the DGHS daily statement added. According to the health experts, the vector-borne disease hit Dhaka city in 2000 subsequently the dengue positive cases were detected in Dhaka city only. But the dengue disease is changing its nature and it is gradually spreading across the country, they said, adding: "All 64 districts of the country have witnessed positive dengue cases." According to the DGHS, Bangladesh reported 1,01,354 dengue cases, the second highest since dengue cases were detected in 2000, in 2019, 1,405 cases in 2020, 28,429 cases in 2021 and 62,382 cases in 2022.
