Three children swept away by flash flooding in Moulvibazar, Netrokona
Two boys aged 17 and 8, and an 8-year-old girl have drowned in floodwaters in Moulvibazar and Netrokona. The dead are Hridoy Ahmed, 17, and Sadi Ahmed, 8, of Shyamerkona village in Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila and Tora Moni, 8, of Gourakanda village in Netrokona’s Mohanganj Upazila. But Hridoy and Sadi were washed away when Hridoy got into the water again to save Sadi. Md Delwar Hossain, chief of Mohanganj Police Station, said Tora fell in the water and went missing on Wednesday afternoon. Country may experience moderate rainfall: BMD
DHAKA, June 20, 2024 (BSS) - The country may experience moderate rainfall as monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate to strong elsewhere over North Bay, said Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) today. "Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country," said the BMD. Day and night temperature may rise slightly over Chattogram division and it may fall slightly elsewhere over the country. Tetulia experienced the highest 153 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours while the highest temperature was 36.4 degrees Celsius in Chuadanga and the lowest was 22 degrees Celsius in Bandarban. The sun will rise at 5.12am tomorrow in Dhaka.

Teesta crosses danger mark as major rivers swell in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA, June 20, 2024 (BSS) – Water levels in all the major rivers flowing through the district rose sharply in last 24 hours till Wednesday 6 pm due to incessant rain and onrush of hilly water from the upstream. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) office sources said the water level of the Brahmaputra increased by 50cm while the Teesta by 30cm, the Karotoa by 30cm and the Ghagot by 48cm during the period. Matiar Rahman, chairman of the Union Parishad (UP), said he informed the officials of the administration about the update of the flood situation in the union. He said that if the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot rivers continue to rise due to rain, the rivers would cross their danger levels very soon. They were watching the situation closely and always maintaining communication with the local public representatives, the elite, and journalists about the flood situation, he said.

In recent months I have been involved in two separate conversations about our prairie mountains. The odd one out, of course is the Riding Mountains. With all these positive check marks it would seem that our prairie mountains are indeed mountains! The problem arises, though, that unlike true mountains, ours are decidedly one-sided.
