After vandalism, Boy Scouts repair historic cabin near Frances Short Pond; water to return by winter, city says
Frances Short Pond was a bustle of activity last weekend as Boy Scouts and other volunteers worked to repair the historic cabin that sits on the banks. The work came after the cabin and several educational plaques around the pond were vandalized within the last year. Davis said the Flagstaff Elks Club donated $1,000 for supplies to fix up the cabin, while the Boy Scouts were providing much of the needed manpower. The hope is to bring the cabin back to a state at which it can again be used for school trips and educational activities. Moran Henn, executive director of Willow Bend, said the group has long used the cabin and pond area as a second classroom.

Home minister accuses Annie of making a ‘false allegation’ in court
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has accused arrested BNP leader Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie of making a 'false allegation' in court following his arrest. "His (Annie’s) claims in court are also untrue because he couldn't provide any evidence of torture. The home minister also asserted that there was no forced entry into Annie's residence during the arrest. The house had security cameras, but no evidence supporting Annie's allegations was found, according to the minister. Police sought a seven-day remand for further questioning, but the court granted them four days to interrogate Annie in their custody.

RAB arrests 3 members of fraud gang
DHAKA, Oct 13, 2023 (BSS) - Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three members of a fraud gang and its mastermind from city`s Santinagar area yesterday evening. Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the Legal and Media Wing of RAB said at a press conference at Kawran Bazar today. During the drive, RAB also rescued abducted Sayed Ali Mondal from city`s Santinagar area and recovered huge amount of gold, laptop and mobile phone worth around Taka 60 lakh from their possession. RAB said the fraud gang has long been involved in taking hostage and kidnapping expatriates relatives and money extortion. Legal action has been taken against them, RAB sources said.

Mahalaya tomorrow
DHAKA, Oct 13, 2023 (BSS) - Mahalaya, an auspicious occasion that heralds the advent of Goddess Durga, will be celebrated at the dawn tomorrow through different rituals by Hindu community members across the country. With the beginning of 'Devipaksha', Mahalaya is observed six days before Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Bangalee Hindu community. Marking the day, special programmes of Mahalaya will be arranged at different temples across the country, including the capital, tomorrow at dawn. Although Durga Puja will formally begin on October 20 on the day of Maha Shasti, the advent of Goddess Durga will be heralded tomorrow. This invitation is extended through the chanting of mantras from Sri Sri Chandi and singing of devotional songs.

Two Flagstaff residents killed in accident near Kayenta Tuesday night
An accident on Highway 160 near Kayenta on the Navajo Nation has led to the deaths of two adults and injuries to their three children Tuesday night. KAFF News first reported the incident on Thursday morning, with Arizona Department of Public Safety officials saying the accident involved a semitruck and a passenger vehicle. The victims in the accident were Dr. Greg Cox and his wife Lindsey Watson. Sechrist administration also encouraged parents to take time to discuss traumatic events with their children and offered information on age appropriate intervention. Other local mental health and support resources include TERROS, a mental health crisis hotline for northern Arizona, the Flagstaff Medical Center Behavioral Health and Emergency Room, and The Guidance Center.

Cornell Sailing Makes History in Weekend Regatta
For the first time in program history, Cornell sailing qualified for the Coed ACC Open Finals after placing seventh in the Coed ACC Open Semifinals in Cambridge, Massachusetts last weekend. The other half of the team finished 10th out of 16 teams in the Stu Nelson Women’s Regatta in New London, Connecticut. The collaborative effort allowed the team to finish fifth overall within their division, with two first-place wins. In Division B, sophomore Sophia Devling skippered for the Red with junior Amelia Neumann, sophomore Sophia Pearce and Harned, who rotated for the crew position. We have reflected on ourselves, and it is an achievable goal.”In Connecticut, the Red participated in the Stu Nelson Women’s Regatta.
