“Freedom Then, Freedom Now”: Ithaca Celebrates Juneteenth
Amid vibrant art and cultural exchange, Ithacans can connect through shared experiences and active listening at the city’s annual Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday, June 19. Themed “Freedom Then, Freedom Now,” this year’s community celebration highlights the achievements and ongoing efforts of Black Americans in pursuit of freedom since the first Juneteenth celebration in 1865. Excluding open mic at The Downstairs, the events will take place at Southside Community Center at 305 South Plain St., Ithaca. In addition to the Juneteenth celebration, Southside Community Center has contributed to various programs in the recent weeks leading up to Juneteenth. Planning and Zoning Commission hears city's reasoning for expanding well protection district
The Gage County Planning and Zoning Commission discussed the city of Beatrice's desire to expand the wellhead protection district during a public hearing Tuesday at the courthouse. Rivera said the wells in the district provide potable water to Beatrice and about half of the population of Gage County. Members of the public who spoke at the hearing questioned the need to expand if the city wasn't planning to drill new wells. "I don't think the wellhead protection area needs to be expanded until it's needed," said Marilee Brinkmeyer of Beatrice, who owns land in the district. "And we're a neighbor that might potentially be affected by that, whether it be water drawdown or restriction because we're in the wellhead protection area."

Dressmaker offers a sense of history
Rayma Volkmer of Wymore started sewing historical clothing about 20 years ago and is now considered a living historian. “My mom gave me an old treadle sewing machine and for the first two years I used it as a plant stand." In 2004, her kids wanted to dress in pioneer clothing for Homestead Days because some of their friends were dressing up. I had no real experience, but I’ve made tons of clothes and immersed myself in history after that.”Volkmer specializes in crafting Victorian clothing on antique treadle sewing machines. “The style of this dress is period correct and the sewing methods, but the material is not correct on this dress.

Return flights from today
Hajj return flights are set to begin today (Thursday) and end on Jul 22, the Ministry of Religious Affairs said in its latest bulletin, reports bdnews24.com. Half of the passengers from Hajj return flights will travel by Biman Bangladesh Airlines while the rest will travel by Saudi Arabian Airlines and Flynas. The flights to Saudi Arabia continued until Jun 12. A total of 218 flights were operated for Hajj pilgrims. They include 106 flights operated by Biman Bangladesh Airlines, 75 by Saudi Arabian Airlines, and 37 by Flynas.

IFC, EPIC Group partner to support sustainable textile manufacturing in Bangladesh
This funding will support EPIC Group's expansion in Bangladesh and the construction of a new manufacturing facility in India, a press release said here today. "Partnering with IFC is a significant step for EPIC Group in pursuit of a more sustainable and innovative textile manufacturing industry," said Ranjan Mahtani, Executive Chairman of the EPIC Group. The partnership between IFC and EPIC Group will support EPIC Group in reducing its environmental footprint significantly, targeting a 65 percent reduction in GHG emission per garment produced by 2030 compared to the 2019 benchmark. The investment announced today builds on IFC's existing relationship with EPIC Group. IFC previously supported EPIC Group with advisory services on greener production and decarbonization through the Global Trade Supplier Finance program.

Water levels rise in 3 rivers, drop in 1 in Netrokona amid heavy rain
Heavy downpours and an onrush of upstream waters have swelled the Ubdakhali, Kangsa, and Dhanu rivers in the last 24 hours. However, the water level of the Someshwari River has dipped slightly. The Ubdakhali River had risen to 32cm above the warning level at Kalmakanda Point, prompting fears of flash floods among locals. On the other hand, the Someshwari River is flowing 1.50 m below the warning levels at Durgapur point and 2.99 m below it at the Bijoypur point. According to District Commissioner Shahed Parvez, the district administration is taking active measures to tackle potential flooding in the region.
