Nafeez Sarafat resigns from role of Padma Bank chairman on ‘health grounds’
The Padma Bank Board of Directors has accepted his resignation, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesman Mezbaul Haque said on Wednesday. “Sonali Bank Managing Director Md Afzal Karim will step in as the acting chairman of Padma Bank until a replacement is found.”Attempts to reach Sarafat for comments were unsuccessful. A national daily cited Sarafat as saying that he was currently in the United States and had undergone a surgery. However, a businessman told bdnews24.com that Sarafat was in Bangladesh on Tuesday night and they met at a business meeting at a hotel in Dhaka as well. Another source with extensive knowledge of the banking sector said Sarafat “had to relinquish” his role due to the dire straits the bank finds itself in.

Russian envoy terms BNP's claim on polls misleading, false
DHAKA, Jan 31 (BSS) - Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytsky today said BNP's allegation that the new Bangladesh government was formed with the help of foreign powers namely Russia, India and China is misleading and false. "It (BNP's allegation) is misleading or false information... don't believe it," he told journalists in response to a reporter's inquiry about the BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy's claim. Gayeshwar had controversially stated that the current government was not chosen by the Bangladeshi people but was instead "installed by foreign powers," specifically naming India, China, and Russia. The Russian Ambassador strongly affirmed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was democratically elected by the citizens and emphasized that a significant 41 percent votes were cast in the last national election. The ambassador was talking with the reporters after holding his maiden meeting with foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the foreign ministry here.

But there are honorable moral crusades, such as that of the Civil Rights Movement, that ushered in a much more moral society. Also consider that Cornell has been through its fair share of moral crusades. And to associate it with drama is absolutely wrong.”The literary awards were introduced by the Bangla Academy in 1960. Literary luminaries such as Nurul Momen, Munier Choudhury, Anis Chowdhury, Mamunur Rashid, Maloy Bhowmick have received the Bangla Academy Award. This year, the Academy expanded the drama category to encompass Jatra, Pala, and literary art films or aesthetic films, leading to Mrittika Chakma and Masud Pathik receiving the Bangla Academy Literary Award. “I will talk about this issue if I ever get a chance to speak to the Bangla Academy about this,” he said.
