"Temperatures during 2023 likely exceed those of any period in at least thelast 100,000 years." The year saw another ominous record: two days in November 2023 exceeded thepreindustrial benchmark by more than two degrees Celsius. 2023 saw the beginning of a naturally occurring El Nino weather phenomenon, which warms waters in the southern Pacific and stokes hotter weather beyond. Oceans absorb more than 90 percent of excess heat caused by human activity, and play a major role in regulating Earth's climate. Methane is the second largest contributor to global warming after CO2, and isresponsible for around 30 percent of the rise in global temperatures sincetheindustrial revolution, according to the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says the history of the 12th national parliamentary election of Bangladesh will be ‘written in gold’. “The contributions of millions of martyrs in the war for independence was also erased from history by distorting it. “Not only Awami League supporters, but people from all walks of life are affected by the BNP today. The ruling party chief also extended her gratitude to the Election Commission, law-enforcement personnel, the administration and those involved with election management for holding election while maintaining law and order. “The election will be written in gold in the pages of history.

WASHINGTON, Jan 9, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - A historic private mission to land on the Moon faced near-certain failure Monday after the spacecraft suffered a "critical loss" of fuel, dealing a major blow to America's hopes of placing its first robot on the lunar surface in five decades. Fixed to the top of United Launch Alliance's new Vulcan rocket, which was making its first flight, Astrobotic's Peregrine Lunar Lander blasted off overnight from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, then successfully separated from its launch vehicle. On Monday night, Astrobotic said it had approximately 40 hours of fuel remaining before Peregrine entered an "uncontrollable tumble." - Failure happens -Controlled touchdowns on the Moon are challenging, with roughly half of all attempts failing. Though they were granted a last-ditch meeting with White House and NASA officials, their misgivings were ultimately ignored.

In 2023, Bangladesh recorded 321,179 hospitalisations and 1,705 deaths from the viral disease. In the latest daily count, hospitals in Dhaka admitted 18 more patients, while the other districts recorded 27 new cases. Of the 352 dengue patients undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country in the morning, 190 were in Dhaka and 162 outside the capital. Experts have blamed a prolonged monsoon and rising temperature, along with a lack of effective measures to kill the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the known carrier of the virus, for the outbreak.

For the world's most populous democracy India, having to endorse a one-sided election and one-party governance is particularly embarrassing. "India is going the US way -- democracy at home and support for dictatorships abroad for strategic considerations," said former intelligence official Benu Ghosh. But will India miss its trusted friends, the old guard in the Hasina cabinet, almost all of whom were missing from the list of candidates after distribution of ticket? If India has to re-build bridges with the new incumbents in the Hasina cabinet, many of them known for their leaning towards Beijing as a counterweight to New Delhi, then it will be of concern to India. Bangladesh could well be the last nail in India's neighbourhood coffin after pro-Chinese regimes have taken over the South Asian landscape from Nepal to Maldives.

The journalist asked Hasina if she, as a “visionary leader”, has the duty to create such an environment where an opposition force will exist. Can I do that?” Hasina asked. Hasina referred to her long stint in the opposition and said: “If you want to be the opposition, you must organise your party. But it won’t be truly an opposition party, will it?”A BBC journalist asked if Bangladesh’s democracy can be lively without an opposition after the BNP’s boycott. Hasina said the boycott by a political party does not mean the absence of democracy.

Sheikh Hasina has said her government cannot pardon Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus because it has nothing to do with his sentencing for labour law violations. The prime minister faced a question about Yunus when she met local and foreign observers and journalists at the Ganabhaban on Monday, a day after a landslide victory confirmed her fourth straight term. A court in Dhaka sentenced the Nobel prize-winning microcredit pioneer Yunus, the chairman of Grameen Telecom, and three other company executives to six months in prison for breaching labour laws on Jan 1. But Yunus, 83, the founding Grameen Bank managing director, and the three others will not start serving time in prison anytime soon, as the court granted them one month's bail on condition that they use the time to launch an appeal against the ruling.
