Polls opened on Sunday in Bangladesh for a parliamentary election with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nearly guaranteed a fourth consecutive term in office, in a vote that has been marred by a widespread crackdown on the opposition. Security remained tight and the mood tense across the country of 170 million people as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the main opposition, which has boycotted the election as unfair, pushed for a nationwide strike. A fire on a train in the capital, Dhaka, late Thursday, which the police are investigating as arson, killed four people. At least 16 polling stations were set aflame on the eve of the vote, the country’s fire department said. Ms. Hasina, 76, who cast her vote in Dhaka soon after polls opened at 8 a.m. local time, urged people to come out in large numbers.

The ruling Awami League has clinched its biggest ever majority in parliament in Sunday’s general election marked by a boycott by the BNP and a low turnout. The resounding win means party chief Sheikh Hasina is headed for a record-extending fourth consecutive term - and the fifth in total. As many as 45 independent candidates, mostly Awami League leaders who contested the party’s choice, won in the balloting. The party’s candidates have lost several of the 26 constituencies left by the Awami League in a seat-sharing deal. The Awami League’s allies the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and the Workers Party won one each.

Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, lauded the public for answering the party’s call to boycott the ‘one-sided’ general election. “Your TV cameras tell the story,” he said to the media on Sunday afternoon after hearing reports of the relatively low turnout for the polls.“You have seen hundreds of thousands of photos on social media… you can see photos of dogs basking in the sun in front of the polling centres… the centre I noted is the one at the Meradia Government Primary School in Dhaka city. This is the situation… the lion’s share of polling centres are free of voters.”The people of the country and the entire world can see that the citizens of Bangladesh are boycotting the polls, he said. “Today, I say to the people, not just from the BNP but on behalf of the 62 political parties boycotting these farcical polls – I salute you. And this is for one reason – the people of Bangladesh have never compromised on the issue of democracy, and they did not do so this time either.”He said the party’s campaign to boycott the polls had ‘certainly been a success’.

The Jatiya Party candidate for the Narayanganj-2 constituency has boycotted the election following a clash that erupted over allegations of vote rigging at a polling centre. Later, the authorities suspended voting at polling booths for both men and women in the centre. The incident occurred at the Ramchandradi Government Primary High School in Araihazar around 10 am on Sunday, said Returning Officer Mohammad Mahmudul Haque. “The supporters of the Jatiya Party nominee vandalised the ballot boxes in front of the presiding officer and we suspended voting in both centres for men and women,” he said.

Nebraska received a commit from Oregon transfer running back Dante Dowdell. Three takes on the decision of the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder. A full running back room with robust competition: NU now sits at five scholarship backs: Ervin, Johnson, Dowdell, Rahmir Johnson and Kwinten Ives. Emmett Johnson held up between the tackles, but needs to grow as a receiver and pass blocker. Dowdell, provided he can block, may get an inside track if he has a big spring.

Nebraska football defensive tackle Nash Hutmacher, known as "Polar Bear" among teammates and fans, made a triumphant college wrestling debut Saturday at the Devaney Sports Center. Hutmacher dispatched Wyoming's Mason Ding, recording a pin in 2 minutes, 7 seconds, to electrify the crowd, which had several of his Husker football coaches and teammates in it. Nebraska (5-0) took both duals Saturday with a 44-3 victory over Wyoming and an 18-17 win by criteria over Northern Iowa. “Today, expectations were I was just going to go out there and apply what we have been working on in the room,” Hutmacher said. “You go from a very emotional high when everything is working out and everyone is getting bonus points,” Allred said.
