Nine drown in Gabon after exceptionally high tidesLIBREVILLE, March 14, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - At least nine people, including four teenagers, drowned in Gabon following exceptionally high sea tides, the government said Wednesday. The drownings were caused by an "increase in the tides linked to climate change", it added. High tide in Libreville usually varies between 1.60 and 1.80 metres, but since Sunday, the water levels have exceeded 2.50 metres (8 feet), the marine weather service said Tuesday. The Libreville coastline is a popular spot for visitors as temperatures rise with the approach of the spring equinox, which brings higher tides. Despite the warnings, the Leon MBA High School beach, where some of the bodies were found, remained open and unmonitored on Wednesday afternoon, an AFP journalist saw.

New Study Decodes Genetic Processes During Ovulation in Mice
The researchers used this technique to create a detailed map of when and where genes are active during ovulation in mice. Bangladesh struggles to arrange gas supply for new gas-fired power plants Azizur RahmanBangladesh is struggling to arrange sufficient gas supply for half a dozen new gas-fired power plants with total generation capacity of around 3,510 MW due to heavy government subsidies and slow-moving reforms, according to project operators and market participants. The power plants that have completed construction are – Unique Meghnaghat Power’s 584-MW plant, the 583-MW Summit Meghnaghat-II and the 718-MW power plant jointly owned by India’s Reliance Power and Japan’s JERA. The three public sector gas-fired power plants nearing completion are the 800-MW Rupsha combined cycle power plant, 416-MW Ghorashal Repowering Unit 3 and 409-MW Ghorashal Repowering Unit 4. Khan said there is already intense competition among existing plants for Petrobangla’s gas but it has agreed to supply gas to the new power plants upon availability. “The power plant owners inked deals and constructed the power plants knowing all the conditions in Bangladesh,” Mohammad Hossain, director general of the government’s power cell, said.

A Statement on the Coulter Invitation - The Cornell Daily Sun
I am writing to set the record straight with respect to the invitation to Ann Coulter ’84 to speak on campus. Having been deeply troubled by an invited speaker at Cornell (any speaker) being shouted down and unable to present their views, I agreed that there could be few more powerful demonstrations of Cornell’s commitment to free expression than to have Ms. Coulter return to campus and present her views. Shielding students or others in our community from viewpoints with which they disagree, or filtering campus speakers based on the content of their presentation, undermines the fundamental role of a university. To that end, I have worked with the Federalist Society at Cornell, the Cornell Political Union, the Heterodox Academy Campus Community at Cornell and other Cornell organizations to sponsor such a presentation. It is my hope and expectation that Ms. Coulter will deliver her remarks in full and will be met with civility and respect from the Cornell audience.

Eminent singer Sadi Mohammad dies by apparent suicide
Renowned Rabindra Sangeet singer Sadi Mohammad’s hanging body has been found in the music room of his house. The police suspect that the artist chose to die by suicide, reports bdnews24.com. Sadi's brother, Shibli Mohammad, told bdnews24.com that his brother died at their Mohammadpur residence sometime after 7:00 pm on Wednesday.
