The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology or BUET has decided to resume postponed term final exams on May 11 after discussions with students who boycotted the tests for the restoration of a ban on politics. Prof Al Amin also said the university will appeal against a High Court order that stayed a ban on political activities on the campus. The university postponed the examinations amid a boycott on Apr 20. The demonstrators said they would return to academic activities if the authorities file an appeal challenging the High Court order staying the ban. Following a writ petition by the BCL activist, the High Court suspended the ban and asked why it should not be lifted permanently.

DHAKA, April 30, 2024 (BSS) - Prime Minister's Principal Secretary M Tofazzel Hossain Miah today told the foreign diplomats that delay in repatriation of the Rohingyas to their homeland in the Rakhine state of Myanmar would become a threat to regional security. He attached a special importance to the role of the international community, including the United Nations (UN), in the quick and permanent solution to this issue. Alongside providing humanitarian aid, the education and training programmes which are carried out in Bangladesh to increase skills of Rohingya people will be helpful in sustainable coexistence in Rakhine after their repatriation, the Principal Secretary added. An alliance of labour unions have once again taken to the streets to reiterate their demands for worker’s rights on the historic May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day. Outside the National Press Club, Trade Union Sanga President Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam read out the manifesto of this year’s May Day at the SKOP rally. After 138 years, this May Day has brought more challenges to the workers, it read. Irrespective of sectors and ownership, there have been delays on the long-standing demand of all workers regarding the passage of the National Minimum Wage Act. The rights of labourers to work for an organisation have been curtailed in various ways.

DHAKA, March 16, 2024 (BSS) - Ten dengue patients were hospitalised in the last 24 hours till this morning, according to the daily statement of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the period, five dengue patients were hospitalised in Dhaka city while five were admitted to different hospitals outside the capital city," the statement added. This year, the total number of cases rose to 1,537 while eight dengue patients are still undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country. Among the total cases, 1,455 patients have already been released, the DGHS statement added. Last year, the country recorded 1,705 dengue-related deaths and a total of 321,179 dengue cases.

DHAKA, March 16, 2024 (BSS)-Jagannath University (JnU) authorities today suspended management studies department assistant professor Deen Islam and law department student Raihan Siddique Amman from the university following the death of law department student Fairuz Abontika. Earlier, Deen Islam was removed from the post of assistant proctor of the university. The university took these steps amid protests by the students who alleged that Abontika committed suicide as she was sexually harassed by Raihan Siddique Amman, said JnU Proctor Mohammad Jahangir Hossain. Her classmates claimed that Abontika wrote on Facebook that the law department student Raihan Siddique Amman had sexually harassed her and when she informed it to assistant proctor Deen Islam, he verbally abused her instead of taking action against Raihan. A five-member probe body led by JnU teachers’ association president Professor Jakir Hossain has been formed to investigate into the matter.
