Forty-three prisoners remain at large after escaping a prison in northern Ecuador, the SNAI prisons agency said on Monday, as security forces continued operations throughout the country. “As a result of this inspection, the escape of 48 people inmates was discovered,” the statement added, noting that five prisoners were recaptured. Security forces also learned that one prisoner had died in the prison, SNAI said, without giving further details. Since the state of emergency was declared, security forces have detained more than 1,500 people and have carried out 41 operations against terrorist groups, according to the government. Operations will continue throughout Ecuador this week, the government said in a separate statement.

British conductor Jan Latham-Koenig was removed from his position as musical director of the Teatro Colón on Friday after being charged with sexual offenses against minors. Latham-Koenig, 70, had been musical director, the highest artistic position at Teatro Colón, since January 2023. The general director of the Colón, Jorge Telerman, had called Latham-Koenig “one of the great conductors of the world scene” when appointing him. He has also conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The indictment in London came during January’s Teatro Colón’s annual recess and came as a surprise to the theater’s authorities, Télam news agency reported.

Argentina’s Central Bank (BCRA) announced on Thursday that it will put AR$10,000 and AR$20,000 bills into circulation this year, making the logistics of the financial system more efficient and allowing for a significant reduction in production costs of finished banknotes. The AR$10,000 bill will feature the images of Manuel Belgrano and María Remedios del Valle, heroine of the Independence War. Argentina’s monthly inflation rate reached 25.5% in December 2023, according to the National Institute for Statistics and Census (INDEC, for its Spanish acronym). The inflation rate, published on Thursday, is the highest since February 1991. It was also the highest 2023 inflation rate in Latin America, surpassing Venezuela’s which was 193% according to the Venezuelan Finance Observatory. Food and non-alcoholic beverages have the highest impact on the inflation rate given the category’s influence on the index. A report by the Center of Argentine Economic Politics (CEPA, by its Spanish acronym) said that the 118% exchange rate jump was the main reason behind December’s inflation rate.
