Mexico and Chile expressed “growing worry” on Thursday over “an escalation of violence” after several months of war between Israel and Hamas in a referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over possible crimes. The Israeli retaliatory offensive on the Hamas-led Gaza Strip has led to increasing international alarm and scrutiny over the deaths of civilians, especially children. But the ICC’s prosecutor has stressed his court has jurisdiction over potential war crimes carried out by Hamas militants in Israel and by Israelis in Gaza. “Israeli officials are not deterred as they continue with their genocidal war,” it said in a statement. Both the ICJ and the ICC handle cases of alleged genocide, with the former resolving disputes between states and the latter prosecuting individuals for crimes.

The wife and three children of Ecuadorian drug lord José “Fito” Macías were deported today along with four other close friends after Argentine authorities discovered that they had been living in a gated community on the outskirts of Córdoba City since January 5. The government has canceled their temporary residences and sent them back to Ecuador, according to official sources. Macías, the fugitive head of criminal group “Los Choneros,” has been identified as one of the masterminds behind the recent wave of violence in the country. The federal and provincial police, together with government authorities, carried out a joint operation to deport the family, with the assistance of Argentine immigration. The minister said that “Ecuadorian authorities believe he is in the jungle, but the precedent that his family was here puts us on red alert”.

The wide-ranging issues addressed in the bill were discussed in several commissions, a pre-requisite to being debated on the Lower House floor. With only 38 deputies, LLA is the only coalition that has confirmed it will back the bill. Deputies will then have to choose which document they want to support before the debate starts on the Lower House floor. The commission had to include members of both the Lower House and the Senate. However, the Lower House only just finished addressing the omnibus bill in commissions and, if approved there, it would need to go through the Senate next.

Argentine race driver Manuel Andújar won the 2024 Dakar Rally in the quads class on Friday. The Yamaha driver finished the last stage in second place, but it was enough to maintain his advantage over French driver Alexandre Giroud. It’s the Argentine driver’s second Dakar crown, after winning the title in 2021. The French driver won six of the 12 stages but was unable to match Andújar’s overall pace, who never dropped below third each day. The Spaniard, who also won the World Rally Championship in 1990 and 1992, had previously won the Dakar in 2010, 2018 and 2020.

Ecuadorean prosecutor Cesar Suarez, who focused on pursuing organized trans-national crime in Guayas province, one of the country’s most violent areas and the site of an on-air attack on a television station last week, has been killed, the attorney general said on Wednesday. Ecuador has suffered a recent burst of violence, including gunmen interrupting the broadcast at TC Television in Guayaquil, the hostage-taking of more than 200 prison staff, explosions in several cities, and the kidnapping of police officers. In response, President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency, including a nighttime curfew, and designated 22 criminal groups as terrorist organizations. “The criminals, the terrorists, will not hold back our commitment to Ecuadorean society,” attorney general Diana Salazar said in a video posted to social media. “We call on the forces of order to guarantee the security of those who are carrying out their duties.”Her office was conducting a preliminary investigation at the site of the killing, Salazar said, expressing her grief for Suarez’s family but giving no further details about the crime.

The income base has been AR$156,000 since December, and the inflation rate in that month alone, when the minimum wage was last increased by 8.5%, was 25.5 percent. The most critical economic variable calculated on the minimum wage figure is social aid programs for more than 1.2 million beneficiaries, which is automatically adjusted and affects retirement benefits and unemployment insurance. This last figure became increasingly meager as formal salaries grew above the minimum, and the minimum wage’s greater incidence became the value of social aid plans. Currently, the beneficiaries of the Potenciar Trabajo plan earn AR$78,000 pesos, half of minimum wage. It’s only the state, which usually acts as an arbitrator, that actually pays the minimum wage.
