It was my second day running Argentina’s most daunting endurance run, and every part of my body was aching in protest. I prepared for and ran El Cruce with 13 runners from Palermo Adventure Team. Danielle embarks on El Cruce. El Cruce organizers take care of setting up tents, cooking, and transporting bags between campsites. Saucony El Cruce is in early December each year.

Argentina’s monthly inflation rate reached 20.6% in January 2024, according to the National Institute for Statistics and Census (INDEC, for its Spanish acronym). The category that saw the biggest monthly increase is “other goods and services,” which went up by 44.4%. It was followed by transportation, which went up by 26.3% mainly due to increases in public transportation and fuel. However, the Fund’s chief economist, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, said in a press conference that inflation would decrease to “single digits by the middle of this year” and could fall “even further.”The IMF calculated that the 2024 inflation rate will be around 150% and that the country’s GDP will fall by 2.8 percentage points. Within this context of extreme political weakness and institutional fragility, Milei will negotiate with Mauricio Macri the possibility of forming a joint government with PRO. The main opposition to this is Karina Milei, who continues to reject a merger between PRO and LLA. “When you get back, we’ll talk.” In an almost disdainful tone, Macri exchanged messages with Milei while the president was in Israel and Rome. He admires Milei’s conviction to carry out austerity measures without considering the political costs but doubts his management capacity. Without allies and confronted with the governors, Milei is now withdrawing into his inner circle while he awaits a call from Macri.

Buenos Aires Herald editorialIn British politics, a strategy known as the dead cat has entered the limelight in recent years. As Boris Johnson wrote in 2013, when you have lost an argument beyond all hope, the dead cat is a way of distracting your adversaries. If you slam a dead cat onto the table, you may not win — but you can be pretty sure people will be talking about something else because now there’s now a dead cat on the table. As with the omnibus bill failure, what’s really behind the anti-abortion bill that fell flat despite raising alarms is an open question. Either way, it seems like the bizarre dead cat metaphor could be useful in the coming years.

In that sense, the literal translation works pretty well, since finding a partner is unfortunately framed as a “hunt” in several languages. As a fun aside, the person being targeted by the metaphorical greyhounds is usually oblivious to it. Fun as flying greyhounds sound, we’d usually just say te está tirando onda. ChamuyoThis lunfardo titan is used all the time: it’s “sweet talk,” the act of sweet talking (the verb form chamuyar) and sweet talker (chamuyero/a/e). The government announced on Thursday that it would decrease subsidies to companies providing transport services nationally — a move that impacts the price of public transport across Argentine provinces. The new measure, together with a 98% cut of discretionary funding for provinces throughout January has provoked an outcry from governors. The transport cuts announced on Thursday via a communiqué include eliminating a national fund that supports public transport in the provinces (Fondo Compensador del Interior) and an unspecified decrease in subsidies for companies providing transportation services in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). According to the communiqué, this is to directly send aid to users who need it most through the SUBE transport card. “This is related to the Fiscal Pact that the governors and the national government signed between 2017 and 2018, where they committed to progressively eliminate differential subsidies.

Six deputies from Milei’s La Libertad Avanza coalition have presented a bill that would criminalize elective abortion in Argentina, overturning the landmark 2020 Congress decision to legalize the procedure. Critics have argued that the bill is a political diversion strategy to draw attention away from the failure of Milei’s omnibus bill project. The bill filed this week proposes repealing the 2020 abortion law. “We believe there is no reason, however dramatic it is, that justifies throwing away an innocent life,” the bill reads. However, as soon as the bill had been presented, deputy Lilia Lemoine told news website Corta that she had not signed the bill.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo attempted to soothe markets after Congress sent the omnibus bill back to commissions, saying that the government’s economic program has not changed despite the setback and that they remain committed to achieving fiscal balance. In pre-market trading, sovereign bonds were down 4%, while Argentine companies’ stocks were down by 7% on Wall Street. “The biggest part of our program for fiscal stabilization was not included in the bill,” Caputo said in an interview with LN+ television channel on Wednesday morning. The government withdrew the fiscal chapter of the bill in late January. Caputo also said that they are close to reaching a deal with the opposition regarding how to calculate funds for pensioners.

“I think change is necessary because the country couldn’t continue as it was,” he stated in a meeting with journalists at the residence of the U.S. He could not confirm whether Secretary of State Antony Blinken would visit Argentina. Also on Nichols’ agenda were meetings with Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, Justice and Human Rights Minister Mariano Cúneo Libarona, and Argentine human rights organizations. Her supporters believe this puts an end to the disruption caused by marches — but critics say it criminalizes protest, and three UN special rapporteurs recently warned that it violates international human rights standards. “[Bullrich] spoke of the priority of collaboration in security, but she and [Cúneo Libarona] also spoke of the importance of respecting human rights and fundamental rights,” Nichols said.
