Heavy rain and whirlwinds wreaked havoc on some parts of Bac Lieu Province in southern Vietnam early on Friday morning, causing one house to collapse and blowing off the roofs of eight others. Authorities are working to help the affected households in Vinh Trach Commune cope with the aftermath of the weather-related incident, the provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control said the same day. The steering committee also suggested offering a total amount of VND225 million (US$8,890) to the impacted residents. The hours-long downpour also brought flooding to many roads in Bac Lieu City and several others in Gia Rai Town, making life of commuters a misery. The steering committee demanded that the provincial administration assign relevant agencies to take action to ensure security in the whirlwind-hit area.

CÀ MAU – A storm that hit U Minh District in Cà Mau Province on Friday destroyed eight houses and damaged the roofs of 13 others, causing estimated losses of over VNĐ1.2 billion (US$47,400). The Border Guard Station of Khánh Tiến also sent personnel to work with local authorities to help clean up and rebuild houses. There were no casualties, but it caused great damage to locals’ houses and seafood farms. Cà Mau is focusing on construction works that will help protect lives and properties from natural disasters and search and rescue, and plans to use information technology for this purpose. Since the start of this year Cà Mau has suffered property damage worth around VNĐ35.7 billion due to natural disasters.

Residents in northern Vietnam are warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and inundation as heavy rainfall may batter the region from Sunday till Wednesday next week, according to the national weather agency. In response to the upcoming intense rainfall, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Friday afternoon sent a dispatch to northern provinces and cities, asking them to urgently handle the aftermath of the recent downpours and floods. These locales were told to timely inform local authorities and people of possible natural disasters so that they can take precautionary measures. Over the past few days, heavy rainfall, flooding, flash floods due to the impact of storm Prapiroon, the second to hit Vietnam this year, have wreaked havoc across the northern region. HSBC has revised its forecast for Vietnam's GDP growth this year to 6.5 percent, up from the previous projection of six percent, following the country's better-than-expected performance in the first half of the year, according to the bank's latest 'Vietnam at a Glance' report. Yun Liu, ASEAN economist at HSBC Global Research, noted that Vietnam's GDP grew 6.9 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of this year, nearly the highest level in two years and well above market expectations of six percent. Along with a small upward revision--5.66 percent in the first quarter, Vietnam’s GDP growth expanded 6.4 percent year on year in the first six months of 2024. Unlike growth, inflation appears to be an imminent concern, read HSBC’s report. However, inflation is likely to subside in the second half of 2024, as favorable effects start to kick in.

The State Securities Commission of Vietnam has proposed eliminating the current regulation that requires foreign institutional investors to deposit 100 percent of the transaction value before trading stocks in Vietnam. If foreign investors fail to make full payments, securities companies through which foreign investors make transactions will take responsibility for the payment, according to the proposal. Tran Truong Manh Hieu, head of the strategy analysis unit at KIS Vietnam Securities Corporation, stated that securities brokerages would be permitted to sell the stocks of foreign institutional investors if these investors fail to make payments. The new policy should consider the potential for foreign institutional investors to default on payments. The State Securities Commission of Vietnam hoped these rules would exert a positive impact on the Vietnamese stock market upgrade, the official added.

HCM CITY — Farmers in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta are having difficulty harvesting their early summer-autumn rice and protect young rice plants since heavy rains have inundated many fields. In Mỹ Tú District, Mỹ Tú Commune has 100ha of ripe rice but farmers cannot harvest them because machines cannot operate in flooded fields. In low-lying areas, rice fields are often 25-35cm under water during the rainy season, according to the provincial Irrigation Sub-department. In Kiên Giang, the country’s largest rice producing province, farmers sowed the summer-autumn rice crop on 276,000ha staggering the cropping. In Cần Thơ, farmers have harvested summer-autumn rice earlier than scheduled and completed harvesting all 71,280ha of summer- autumn rice.
