The "catastrophic failure" of an aluminum ferry gangway caused the deaths Saturday of seven people who were attending an annual cultural event on historic Sapelo Island off the coast of Georgia, officials said Sunday. "We are heartbroken to learn about the ferry dock walkway collapse on Georgia's Sapelo Island," Biden said in the statement. Vice President Kamala Harris is also "praying for all those who were killed or injured in the collapse of the ferry dock walkway on Georgia's Sapelo Island," she said in a statement Saturday. Firefighters battle 'diablo wind' to extinguish Oakland fire that burned 2 homes
Calls arrived around 1:30 p.m. on Friday reporting a fire in front of a home in the Oakland hills. The fire burned two homes and damaged several others, while forcing hundreds to evacuate. The blaze in the Oakland Hills burned a day before the Oct. 19 anniversary of a 1991 fire that destroyed nearly 3,000 homes and killed 25 people. During a diablo wind, the air is so dry that relative humidity levels plunge, drying out vegetation and making it ready to burn. The strong winds are expected to last through part of the weekend.

Suicide Basin is a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier above the city of Juneau. Since 2011 it has released glacier lake outburst floods each year that cause inundation along Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River. “We expect moderate flooding from this event, not major flooding,” said Nicole Serrin, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Juneau. The flood warning was in effect until Monday.

Mozambique rocked by the killings of 2 prominent opposition figures soon after disputed election
The brutal burst of violence rocked a country where tensions were already high amid a disputed election. Paulo Guambe, the spokesperson for PODEMOS, was also in the car and was killed, the party said in a statement. PODEMOS is a relatively new opposition party that challenged the 49-year rule of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique, or Frelimo, party in the Oct. 9 election. Mondlane, PODEMOS and other opposition parties have accused Frelimo of electoral fraud and rigging the election. They signed a peace deal in 1992 and Renamo became the main opposition party following Mozambique's first democratic elections in 1994, but the peace between them has been fragile.
