ADHD has a strong genetic component and is highly heritable, and many children with ADHD have a parent who also has the disorder. Photo courtesy of James MontanezFabrikant-Abzug is working to understand how parenting strategies can impact a child’s ADHD symptoms, especially when that parent has ADHD themselves. Medication and therapy are not the only ways to mitigate a child’s ADHD symptoms; interventions that improve parenting strategies also work — but less so when the parents themselves have ADHD. Fabrikant-Abzug is working with her mentor Lauren Friedman, an assistant professor of psychology at ASU, to untangle the interactions between parenting style and a child’s ADHD symptoms. When both a parent and their child have ADHD, Fabrikant-Abzug explained that it can create a feedback loop.

Cadiz Inc.’s latest proposal to pump Mojave Desert groundwater for hydrogen production raises new environmental concerns despite promises of renewable energy and community benefits. In short:Cadiz plans to supply groundwater to produce green hydrogen using solar energy, marketing it as an environmentally friendly solution. Conservationists argue the project, which will take place north of Joshua Tree National Park, threatens desert ecosystems and relies on rebranding to address longstanding opposition. The company pledges tribal ownership and water supplies for low-income communities but faces legal and environmental hurdles. While green hydrogen could aid the energy transition, using scarce desert water risks harming critical ecosystems.

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy this week, stoking concern about how the financial peril of a low-fare option could impact prices across the industry. “Guests can continue to book and fly without interruption and can use all tickets, credits and loyalty points,” Spirit Airlines said in a statement on Monday. MORE: Spirit Airlines files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protectionSome experts downplayed the effect on prices, saying Spirit Airlines holds a relatively small market share and alternative low-cost carriers would jump into a void left in the event of downsizing or merger. The financial travails faced by Spirit Airlines are part of a wider trend that has thinned out low-cost offerings, placing increased importance on the fate of Spirit Airlines for the competitiveness of the marketplace, Larounis added. What does the Spirit Airlines bankruptcy mean for airfares?

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez at a Met Gala after-party in New York on May 6. There’s huge concern that Bezos is going to pull the plug.”That doesn’t seem likely, at least in the near term. Instead, owner Jeff Bezos — and his already controversial publisher pick, Will Lewis — seems determined to fix the paper, whether the current staff likes it or not. Patty Stonesifer, a longtime Bezos confidante who served as interim Post CEO before Lewis came aboard, is involved in the process, I’m told, along with Lewis and Bezos. Gold is a champion of what the Post has been — she has been there for over a decade — and Lewis et al.

And so far, these decades-later legacy sequels — or “lega-sequels” — have helped boost a box office still recovering from the pandemic and fewer big titles due to last year’s dual Hollywood strikes. The movie hits theaters Nov. 22, alongside the highly anticipated “Wicked.”If its lega-sequel predecessors are any indication, “Gladiator II” could be bound for box-office success. In the fall, Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” burst from its grave, grossing almost $451 million worldwide, and ranking fourth in this year’s domestic box office. For “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” it was the practical effects, which made extensive use of prosthetics, puppets and some stop-motion animation. “Blade Runner 2049” brought back Harrison Ford in his replicant-hunting role after 35 years but flopped at the box office.

.”-Leonard Cohen, lyric from “You Want It DarkerThere is a kind of psychotherapy called paradoxical psychotherapy. Paradoxical therapy does have many drawbacks, though, which might suggest why it has had limited popularity. Yet, whether intentional or not, many of the recommended nominations, if paradoxical, could backfire. Since we in psychiatry have some expertise in paradoxical therapy, we should also consider doing what is not expected, which might be to monitor how these nominations are doing and, if approved, producing. A prolific writer and speaker, he has done a weekday column titled “Psychiatric Views on the Daily News” and a weekly video, “Psychiatry & Society,” since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged.

As justifiably alarmed as Democrats are by President-elect Donald Trump’s radical agenda and his nominations of unqualified candidates for Cabinet positions, these actions may be even more terrifying for Republican senators up for reelection in 2026. Susan Collins of Maine and Thom Tillis of North Carolina will be two of the most hotly contested races. Meanwhile, Daines, Rounds and other Republican senators from farming states will have to decide whether to remain mute when across-the-board tariffs drive up farm bankruptcies and destroy the rural economy. If they choose the latter, they certainly face the potential for a primary challenge from a MAGA Republican. Sometimes, Democrats may block the most harmful legislation; more often, the goal will be to make vulnerable senators pay a significant political price for complying with dangerous MAGA policies.
