JUST a few hours before he disappeared, Christopher Hughes, 37, phoned his sister, Fran, for a chat and told her he loved her. “I knew my brother and I knew he wouldn’t have done what they accused him of,” says his other heartbroken sister, Andrea. “There are some nasty, vicious comments about how he deserved it because of what he did,” says Andrea. “In a kidnap it’s life and death,” DI Justin Bryant, who led the case, tells us in an exclusive interview. 12 Mamid Curtis Balbas is taken into custody Credit: Minnow Films12 Police search for evidence at the garage Credit: Minnow Films12 Alan Jaf is searched by police after being named Credit: Minnow FilmsFive men are now in custody and more were arrested after the documentary filming ended.

He added the message “time for a 🔥TIME FOR WAR.”On July 30, a violent mob targeted the mosque that Mr. McIntyre had highlighted, and dozens of police officers were injured. Days of unrest convulsed Britain over the next week, as rioters clashed with the police, lit cars on fire, attacked mosques and ransacked businesses. Mr. McIntyre posted a selfie in July 2022 in which he gave a Nazi salute, and after his arrest, the police found a copy of “Mein Kampf,” Hitler’s political manifesto, in his home. The Merseyside Police, which oversee policing in the Liverpool area, said Mr. McIntyre’s messages on Telegram encouraged others to participate in violent disorder and cause criminal damage in Southport. He also made other “failed attempts to instigate disorder at other locations,” the police said in a statement.

It quotes an unnamed Labour backbencher saying the prime minister should consider sacking her if the situation doesn't improve in the next few months. There's a suggestion in the Daily Mail that Starmer has been left "struggling to contain turmoil in the Treasury", external. It says pressure is mounting both on the chancellor and Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq, whose family in Bangladesh is facing corruption allegations. It recalls its own comparison between the length of Liz Truss's tenure as prime minister, and the shelf life of a salad ingredient. The paper points out that if the prime minister did replace her, he would need to decide what the alternative economic strategy would be.

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, The increasing noise from the government, and from those such as Sir Tony Blair and Lord Hague of Richmond, about allowing access to NHS data for AI purposes is welcome (reports, Jan 13). However, removing the barriers to access to these data will not be easy. I have worked at the coalface of NHS data analysis for 30 years, and the greatest headache faced by investigators and innovators has always been data access. This cultural resistance is the biggest limiting factor to the deployment of these assets to achieve public health benefits and economic growth. Over these years I have witnessed an in-built suspicion that somehow investigators and innovators want to access NHS

Working at the Summer Isles Hotel years ago, Tarnia met a local guy called Scotty and moved here for good. But all this may be about to change, thanks to the new owner of the Summer Isles Hotel. Regenerating the Summer Isles is his pet project; in 2017 he snapped up all 766 acres of Tanera Mor. Summer Isles jobs will become year-round jobs. As we drive back towards Drumrunie, we feel we are leaving the old Coigach and Summer Isles behind for good.

Every time a member of Eagles quit the bandLike many great bands in history, the Eagles‘ backstory is a litany of fallouts and walkouts. We usually place the band’s creative leaders, Don Henley and Glenn Frey, at the front of the drama. Frey described Leadon as “one of the greatest country guitar players, but whenever I wrote a rock and roll song, he was the lead guitarist. With Henley and Frey watching their fellow founders walk out, the band now comprised Joe Walsh and Don Felder, both playing guitar in the band. The line-up of Henley, Frey, Walsh, Schmitt, and Felder fired up the Eagles melody machine again in ‘94 before Felder was once more ousted from the band in 2001 following ongoing legal battles over the Eagles’ royalty payments.

The dream of AI is that humanity is able to create and harness a higher power of intelligence, capable of solving all the many problems we cannot solve ourselves. The nightmare is that the solutions it finds will be worse than the problems, and we will be powerless to stop it. There have been many thousands of articles, research papers, long-form blogs, dystopian novels and so on dedicated to the subject, but none so perfect as that found in the Daddy Robot episode of the magnificent dog-based children’s cartoon Bluey. In Daddy Robot, Bluey asks Daddy Robot to tidy the playroom for her because she can’t be bothered to do it herself. Daddy Robot responds by throwing Bluey and her little sister Bingo in

Trade will shrink in importance for the UK economy over the next ten years, according to a sobering report by Boston Consulting Group. Between 2023 and 2033 UK trade will grow by 0.7 per cent per year but GDP will grow at 1.6 per cent annually over the same period, the report said, thanks to declining transactions with key markets beyond just the EU. The figure is well below Boston’s estimate of a global trade growth average of 2.9 per cent and is itself a downward revision from its report last year in which it forecast UK trade growth of 0.9 per cent over the decade. “If you are a country like the UK’s historically been, that sees the growth that comes from trade as
