Chief officers call for radical overhaul of structure of UK policing
The current structure of 43 geographical forces was established in the 1960s and there have long been concerns that the model is not fit for purpose. Research by report sponsor Virgin Media O2 also found that three forces in England and Wales had no officers dedicated to investigating fraud. “It’s certainly my personal contention that the safer streets mission is simply not achievable without digital data and technology,” he said. The NPCC said that projects that have already been piloted have saved 347,656 workforce hours and £8.2 million per year, and could save 15 million hours and £370 million per year if rolled out nationally. The system to automatically redact text is estimated to save around one million hours of staff time per year.

UK Authorizes Rape and Human Trafficking Charges Against Andrew and Tristan Tate
The British authorities have authorized charges of rape, human trafficking and assault against the online influencer Andrew Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement on Wednesday. The charges were authorized in January 2024, prompting the release of European Arrest Warrants for the Tate brothers, but they were not publicly confirmed by the service until Wednesday. The service said a total of 21 charges had been authorized against the brothers, who were born in the United States and hold dual British and American citizenship. The statement also said they would be extradited to the United Kingdom after the conclusion of separate criminal proceedings in Romania. Charges can be lodged against suspects only when they are physically in Britain.

The salvage code of practice is a voluntary scheme for insurers and salvage firms, which helps to categorise written-off vehicles in order to prevent unsafe vehicles and parts returning to UK roads. The updates – the first since 2019 – now brings electric and hybrid vehicles within its guidance and considers megacasting, reusable parts and other advanced vehicle construction methods.
