India-UK trade: High-level delegation visits London to showcase textile strength; leverage CETA pact

A high-level delegation of senior officials and exporters is in London to highlight India’s textile value chain and strengthen trade ties with the UK, the ministry of Textiles said in an official statement on Tuesday. The visit comes as India looks to diversify its export markets following the US decision to impose a steep 50% tariff on apparel imports, a move that could impact Indian shipments to its largest market, PTI reported.India is now targeting 40 countries representing nearly $600 billion in textile and apparel imports, offering what officials call “vast opportunities” to expand its global share.India is currently the fourth-largest textile exporter to the UK. Exports stood at $2.16 billion in 2024-25, accounting for 6.6% of the UK’s textile and apparel imports. On July 24, India signed a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the UK, described as the country’s most ambitious trade pact yet. Covering 26 sectors, from tariffs to technology, the agreement is expected to double overall bilateral trade in goods and services to $112 billion from the current $56 billion.“The Indian delegation led by Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is visiting London to showcase India’s strength across the textile value chain and to deepen India-UK trade engagement. The delegation includes representatives of all major Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and leading exporters,” the ministry said.On the opening day, programmes included a Textile Roadshow and meetings with buyers and sourcing houses across handicraft, handloom and carpet sectors.“The Textile Roadshow, jointly organised by the High Commission of India, London, and the Ministry of Textiles with EPCs, highlighted the vast opportunities under CETA,” the statement added.India’s textile exports are targeted to double by 2030, driven by sustainability initiatives and new market access through trade agreements such as CETA. The pact is India’s 16th and one of its most wide-ranging.
