In defence of HR – why the Sunday Times got it wrong
An article on the Times website tells us that ever expanding HR departments have damaged productivity in the UK, although they may have made workplaces ‘more pleasant’. John Hayes of Constantine Law takes explains why the author misrepresents the reasons behind the growth of HR and the impact of laws in the employment sphereThe recent Sunday Times article How HR took over British business and got in the way of actual work, describes a bloated HR sector overreaching itself. It is legitimate to ask “why” the number of HR professionals has grown but the reasons for this are complex and have played out over many years. In short, the growth in HR is the market’s natural response to a “rights based” working culture. HR is the bridge between what employees increasingly expect and what organisations can sustainably provide.

TaMo, TCS stocks slide as JLR woes linger
Representative imageMUMBAI: A fallout of the cybersecurity breach at the UK factory of auto major Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the stock price of Tata Motors , JLR's parent, fell over 2.5% on Thursday. A report in Financial Times said that the British car maker may incur losses aggregating $2 billion due to the attack.Along with Tata Motors, the stock price of TCS, the IT transformation partner for the UK-based auto major, also slid over 2.5% during the day.BSE on Thursday asked Tata Motors to clarify if the expected $2 billion loss is higher than JLR's FY25 profit, which was about $1.8 billion. The company is yet to respond to the exchange's query.

Couple enjoy year of success owning Captain Nelson Tavern, Maryport
Almost a year on from buying their much loved local The Captain Nelson Tavern back in November 2024, Philip and Avril Routledge have restored one of Maryport's most loved pubs back to it's former glory. Avril said: "It's always been something on our radar, then last year we were just walking past the pub, its a pub we have frequented for the past 20 years, its always been an amazing community related pub. "One day we were saying why isn't it open and then we said 'Why don't we just buy it?' The interior of The Captain Nelson Tavern(Image: Supplied)Known affectionately by some in the town as 'The Vatican' because it's original owners were Roman Catholics, the pub was named after Captain William Nelson, a Maryport seafarer who commanded sailing ships until he was 70 without ever losing a man or a vessel. "I hope we are showing that it can be done, with hard work, graft and community support'.

Medicine price rises ‘necessary’ to secure investments, science minister says
Days later, AstraZeneca announced it had paused plans to invest £200 million at a Cambridge research site. At the start of the trip, the British pharmaceutical giant GSK revealed plans to put nearly £22 billion into US R&D and manufacturing over the next five years. A boost to the UK industry came on Thursday with vaccine-maker Moderna’s announcement that it had opened a new manufacturing base in Oxfordshire. The company said it is the UK’s first facility to manufacture mRNA jabs onshore. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the “new cutting-edge facility” in Oxfordshire marks the “next pivotal moment in boosting our nation’s health, innovation and economy”.

Lake District: Tributes to Neal Doggett after Kirkstone Pass crash
Neal Doggett, 64, who grew up in Windermere and lived in Edinburgh, was riding his bicycle at the time of the collision. His family said: “Neal was a much-loved father to two beautiful daughters, a husband and a brother. “Neal frequently came back to Windermere to visit family and riding up Kirkstone Pass was one of his joys. Although the circumstances of his death are tragic, his family know that he died in a place that was special to him. UK confirms game times for Purdue, Gonzaga, Indiana, and other games
The 2025-26 college basketball season is right around the corner, and we’re getting more confirmed game times for various Kentucky Wildcats games. On Thursday, UK announced the times for five more games, the first being the massive exhibition showdown with the Purdue Boilermakers, who could be the preseason No. That October 24 game at Rupp Arena will tip off at 6 PM ET on the SEC Network. On December 13, Kentucky will host the Indiana Hoosiers at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN in the first game of the renewed blue-blooded rivalry. Two other game times confirmed are the November 26 game vs. Tennessee Tech at 7 PM ET on the SEC Network, as well as the December 9 game vs. NC Central at 7 PM ET on the SEC Network.
