Keeping a distance from another person in a 7-Eleven queue and facing the wall while in an elevator has become second nature. During the lockdown, you may develop green thumbs and realise that you're quite the potted plant pundit. If you're a covidient, you take Miss Rona seriously and always get into elevatorantine while riding a lift with others. Miss Rona may have ruined so many things but we also witnessed an outpour of goodwill and charitable acts by ordinary people and organisations towards the less fortunate. While you may want to leave many things behind with 2020, I would like to encourage you to continue to be empathetic.

A banner year for M&A deals
BBL completed the acquisition deal in October 2020 following completion of the mandatory tender offer agreement. The new entity, called Line Man Wongnai, is expected to have strength in both online and offline ecosystems. Line Man engages with 200,000 restaurant partners and Wongnai offers a point-of-sale solution for restaurant management, which is a growing business. Yod Chinsupakul, chief executive of Line Man Wongnai, said the pandemic accelerated online food delivery adoption by 1-2 years. Line Man Wongnai aims to become a unicorn startup and hold pole position in the country's end-to-end food platform by 2023.

The Director of Public Health Promotion in Chiang Mai said the province will not ban New Year events due to the economic impact of doing so. People from Samut Sakhon, a new hotspot of the virus, must be quarantined for 14 days once they arrive in Chiang Mai. In Bangkok, governor Aswin Kwanmuang has announced measures to prevent and control Covid-19 in Bangkok.

Travellers seek more flexibility in 2021
The study's aim was to learn about the impact of Covid-19 on travellers around the world in 2020 and in 2021. In 2020, two-thirds of travellers had a planned trip cancelled due to Covid-19 and only a third of travellers took a trip during the pandemic. In the next 12 months, travellers are more likely to take trips between April and September 2021. Also, more than half of travellers are looking for flexibility such as travel insurance and trip protection, full cancellation options, and refunds on transport and accommodations. Migrant traffickers act in gangsIllegal labour smuggling networks have been operating in a systematic and organised manner, bribing their way through checkpoints to bring in migrant workers, a source told the Bangkok Post. Initially, migrant workers officially pass through the Mae Sot immigration checkpoint using border passes, which allows them to stay in the country for seven days. From there, it's smooth sailing, with fewer immigration checkpoints where the smugglers still pay money for clearance, the source said. From there, illegal migrant workers are sent to other provinces nationwide, the source said. "No matter how they enter the country, they have to pay authorities through smuggling gangs," the source said.

PAO elections: old politics? The results of the recent Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO) elections, with so many incumbent leaders making a comeback, may give the impression that was a victory of old politics and that local people still do not care much about change. About 40% of the winners of the PAO elections, Thailand's first local elections in some seven years, are old faces, with the ruling Palang Pracharath Party making a big sweep in more than 20 provinces, followed by Bhumjaithai, almost 10, and Pheu Thai, nine. Some caution that such election results show that even after the country's move towards high political awareness in national politics, this year's pro-reform protests have not spilled over into local politics. The PAO elections were just the start of the resuscitation of local politics after years under the military regime.

46 new Covid cases, excluding migrant workers | Bangkok Post: learning
Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said the 39 new Covid-19 cases were all linked to the shrimp market in Samut Sakhon province. Two others were Myanmar nationals, a housewife in Krabi province and a department store employee in Tak province. The seven new cases among quarantined arrivals came from Bahrain, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Dr Taweesilp said the CCSA was not reporting new cases among migrant workers for several reasons. Of all 5,762 local cases, 4,095 (71%) had recovered, including 17 discharged over the previous 24 hours, and 1,607 were in hospital, the CCSA said.

Schools shut amid Covid fears | Bangkok Post: learning
More schools in Bangkok and Pathum Thani were ordered to close on Tuesday due to Covid-19 fears. Twenty-nine schools in Pathum Thani were temporarily closed until Jan 3, after a couple working as seafood vendors in Wat Sa Bua market, Thanyaburi, were found to be infected. In Bangkok, Samsenwittayalai School said on Tuesday it would switch to online learning from today until Dec 30. Students, parents and teachers who had been in close contact with confirmed cases and/or visited Samut Sakhon since Dec 1 were advised to be tested, the school director said. As for schools in Samut Sakhon, the location of the latest Covid-19 hotspot, all schools had already been shut.

A recent trending hashtag, #RemoveAnutin, seems to be one of these telltale social media signs that exposes the general public's sentiment towards Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. At that time, Mr Anutin also insisted the country would not need to go into a lockdown because of this "trivial" health threat. Mr Anutin did not stop there. In response, Mr Anutin wrote a sarcastic comment saying he saw the poster's face and understood that a dog would not understand human beings.
