Photos © HBO AsiaKaley Cuoco has come a long way since her role as Penny, the hot girl next door in hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Spanning 12 seasons between 2007 and 2019, The Big Bang Theory was a successful comedy for a whole bunch of reasons. The Flight Attendant is a rollercoaster thriller about a flight attendant whose life turns upside down when she becomes involved with a horrific murder case in Thailand. I was not really involved and this flight attendant came up and thought it would be very funny to knock on the wall above my head really loudly and say, 'Knock knock, Penny! Knock knock, Penny!

Teachers need to learn child rightsIn this May 22 file photo, activists display white and black masks signifying good and bad teachers in their campaign against school violence. But when it comes to abuse by teachers and school violence in Thailand, incidents like these are merely the tip of the iceberg. This culture of impunity rooted in school authoritarianism allows predators to freely exploit school students. The teacher education system must focus on proper child development, instil awareness on child rights protection, and observe classroom management with non-violent interventions. This is only possible when we start fixing the authoritarian education system which has no respect for the rights of children.

No end to flood woesAs heavy floods battered the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, causing loss of lives and property, the state has not come any closer to a long-term comprehensive solution. Now most state agencies are focusing on relief and rescue operations as the death toll increases. Some officials insisted that the project was mapped out during the time when state water projects were allowed to skip the EIA process. In fact, at the end of the Prayut regime, state agencies had promised to suspend the project and form a panel to consider the problem and find a proper way out. Instead, if the Prayut government is sincere about resolving the problem, it must order state agencies to honour their promise, form a joint panel and give locals a say.

Why the war on uniforms scares 'phuyai' witlessWhy has the campaign against school uniforms, which has struck a chord only among some students, so irked the phuyai or adults in Thai society? School uniforms also nurture discipline, they argue. It is astonishing how the row over school uniforms has become so contentious, turning it into a new hotspot of social polarisation. So, how does the relatively minor debate over school uniforms fit in this bigger picture? That is why the Bad Students' campaign to abandon school uniforms strikes at the heart of these phuyai.

The World Health Organization set a goal for a healthy and green city to have 8 sq/m of trees per capita. News of big trees being chopped down appears often on social media. "We need time for Bangkok to develop sustainable green areas, with more big trees," Ms Walailak told the Bangkok Post. Many big trees with large root systems are planted on small pavement areas that are not deep enough or have utility lines running underneath. Root systems sometimes cannot expand making big trees fall or suffer from bad health.

Push for a republic a pipe dreamLast Friday, the Free Youth group, which is an integral part of the anti-establishment Ratsadon group, posted a message on the subject of the republic on its Facebook page. The group explained that a republic, a state in which the masses are the boss of the government, is a predominant form of governance worldwide. It emphasises the decentralisation of power, with rulers coming from free and fair elections -- not determined by bloodlines. In it, the group said, there are no blue bloods, in fact, no blood colour other than red. In other words, the senators are no better than Rung, given their little understanding of the monarchy and the roots of political conflict here.

More vaccine help neededProgress in developing a Covid-19 vaccine has raised hopes the world will be able to better deal with the virus that has so far claimed 1.2 million lives with 49 million confirmed cases. According to a report by Duke Global Health Innovation Center revealing pre-orders of large countries from the three frontrunners of Pfizer Inc, Moderna Inc and AstraZeneca, the EU placed a pre-order of 700 million doses; the US purchased 700 million doses with an option to order an additional 500 million doses; India purchased 500 million doses and Japan, 290 million doses. The UK purchased 145 million doses; Indonesia and Brazil both purchased 100 million doses each, and Canada purchased 96 million doses. For local vaccine development, there are three potential projects. They include a mRNA vaccine by Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine; a DNA-type vaccine by Thai-French Bionet-Asia Co, and plant-based vaccine by Baiya Phytopharm Co, a Thai startup at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Pharmacy.
