A gender advocacy group fears that a campaign for scrapping the tax on period products will stall due to political instability. "Many countries have abolished the tax on period products. Scotland is the first country in the world to make period products free for all after a four-year campaign. The country passed the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act last November. If one pad costs 5 baht, women have to pay 125 baht per month, including the tax of 9 baht.

Govt jab rollout falls short of public's hopesA few minutes after the prime minister entered Bang Sue Grand Station, dozens of officials formed lines and followed suit. Each wearing a face-mask and respecting social distancing, they were ready for the opening of the national vaccine rollout day on Monday. Cashing in on the meaningless ceremony was already inappropriate -- the ministers didn't seem to realise the risks of the unnecessary site inspection for the prime minister and his entourage on vaccination day. In most advanced countries, vaccination sites have been approved and set up by professionals without prime ministers stealing the show. The high efficiency seems like good news and should fulfill the prime minister's dream of administering 100 million doses within this year.

End defence fund secrecyThe opposition's move to dig into the government's classified budget, funds which are free from scrutiny by the House of Representatives, deserves public support. The party has appointed 15 members to a House budget review panel. Yutthapong Charassathien, deputy leader of the party, said the classified funds were not fleshed out. It's unfortunate the government maintains the classified budget for inexplicable projects and activities. Now it's up to the 72-member House budget review panel.

Ignoring its social roots is one of the main reasons why Thailand's efforts to tackle ocean plastic waste are far from being successful. The documentary A Plastic Ocean helps sensitise the public about the importance of efficient waste management by local communities to reduce marine pollution. The state authorities can no longer treat locals as small, unimportant people to tackle marine plastic pollution. They play an important role in reducing marine plastic pollution. The government should close the disparity gap and empower them by making comprehensive state services available to local communities.

Stop health staff threatsPublic Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul threatening state hospitals with disciplinary action for announcing vaccination delays will do more harm than good to this crucial mission. As public health minister, Mr Anutin's duty is to support them in every possible way. It is no time for the Public Health Ministry, which stands at the vanguard of the battle against the pandemic, to act vengefully against its own personnel. Mr Anutin on Monday said the public health permanent secretary had set up a panel to probe why some state hospitals announced vaccination delays. Many officials including Mr Anutin himself also admitted that the main jab AstraZeneca will be delivered gradually with no fixed amount or timing.

Thailand's road to the 2022 World Cup reached an end on Monday after the War Elephants lost 3-1 to the United Arab Emirates. The result in Dubai means Thailand cannot finish in the top two of Group G of Asia's second qualifying stage. "In the first half, our team could not attack them but in the second half, we did quite well," said the Japanese. Thailand will end their Group G campaign with a meaningless game against Malaysia on June 15. The midfielder was a mainstay of the South Korean team when they took the world by surprise under Guus Hiddink at the 2002 World Cup, which the country co-hosted with Japan.

I did not, however, get to see any of Puglia's pizzica folk music and dance. This month's Transglobal World Music Chart has fixed that with an album by Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (CGS), Meridiana, which is riding high in the top spot on the chart. The band, a seven-person ensemble with a dancer have taken Southern Italian pizzica music and dance and added sounds and musicians from outside the region to make the music more contemporary. Transglobal World Music Chart Top 20 June 2021 (Band, album title, record label)1. Ben Aylon · Xalam (Riverboat / World Music Network)7.

Crypto: A curse worse than cashRansomware -- a type of malicious software that restricts access to a computer system until a ransom is paid -- is not a good look for cryptocurrencies. But for anyone trying to avoid stringent capital controls, launder illicit gains, or evade US financial sanctions, crypto can still be an ideal option. Although Bitcoin and its crypto variants have by no means surpassed the dollar in facilitating the global underground economy, they are certainly on the rise. If governments will ultimately have to increase dramatically their regulation of crypto transactions, why have cryptocurrency prices in general, and the price of Bitcoin in particular, soared? But, ultimately, reducing the potential liquidity of hard-to-trace crypto will require a high level of international coordination, at least in advanced economies.

Murky start to jab rollout may get murkierIsn't it about time for the government to unveil all the details about its Covid-19 vaccine procurement deals, whether with AstraZeneca or SinoVac? The mass vaccination rollout is literally the nation's lifeline. Since it set the rollout to start yesterday, it was assumed the 6 million jabs would arrive before that date. The reality is the government had only about 3.5 million doses in its hands in early June. Its hope of receiving another 3 million doses before month's end remains just that.
