Hong Kong democracy leader detained on Tiananmen anniversaryAn artist in Hong Kong mourns the victims of China's deadly Tiananmen Square crackdown after authorities banned an annual vigil and vowed to stamp out any protests on the June 4 anniversary. HONG KONG: Hong Kong police detained a democracy leader on Friday morning as authorities sought to prevent any public commemoration of the anniversary of Beijing's deadly Tiananmen crackdown. Huge crowds have traditionally gathered in Hong Kong to mark the anniversary of Chinese troops crushing peaceful democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989. Authorities banned this year's gathering citing the coronavirus pandemic -- although Hong Kong has not recorded an untraceable local transmission in more than a month. Much like the initial generation of Tiananmen survivors who fled abroad three decades ago, many Hong Kong democracy figures have chosen self-exile and plan to lead their own commemorations overseas.

A farmer trims leaves of sugar cane at a plantation in Suphan Buri province. A number of issues have hindered the use of combine harvesters and other high-tech harvesting machinery in the Asean sugar sector. This growth will be the result of recovery from drought, sugar cane yield improvements and strong export opportunities. The largest foreign manufacturers of sugar cane combine harvesters used in the country include John Deere, Cameo and Case IH. This will be supported by increased use of combine harvesters in the sugar sector in other Southeast Asian countries.

Pass bill to aid dissidentsOn June 4 last year, political activist Wanchalearm Satsaksit who lived in exile in Cambodia simply vanished. Local media VOA Khmer reported that CCTV footage showed a black SUV speeding away from Mr Wanchalearm's apartment. However, the DSI has yet to decide whether to accept Mr Wanchalearm's case. Mr Wanchalearm fled to Cambodia in 2014 after failing to respond to a summons issued to political dissidents. His mysterious abduction has bred speculation that he might be another victim of enforced disappearance, a fate that has not been unusual for dissidents in Thailand.

Tax case probe neededFinally, the Supreme Court has ordered a probe into a bribery scandal in which at least two former senior judges were implicated for their role in a tax dispute that involved a Thai subsidiary of Japanese automaker Toyota. It's reported that four judges from the Supreme Court and Appeal Court have been appointed to a 10-member panel to look into the allegations. The US news outlet also cited a Thai law firm as a bribe facilitator. Therefore, it's welcome news that the Office of Judiciary has promised a swift probe against its own people in the latest case, no matter how senior they are. Apart from that, the Office of Judiciary and the Supreme Court must ensure the Toyota investigation is fair and transparent, so it meets public expectations.

Furthermore, he didn't outline the measures City Hall intended to take to prevent transmission at the reopened sites. It wasn't the first time the CCSA has overturned City Hall's orders when it comes to Covid measures. There are concerns that allowing these businesses to reopen might lead to more infections, and the fears are valid. The BMA is scheduled to decide on whether to let these venues reopen in two weeks. But most importantly, Pol Lt Gen Aswin must consult the CCSA and other relevant authorities before making any further decisions on easing Covid-related restrictions.
