Coleman shocks HendersonLas vegas: Jenny Coleman pulled off the upset of the day at the LPGA Match-Play on Wednesday, knocking off world No.5 Brooke Henderson 1-up to open round-robin play at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canada's Henderson, a 10-time winner on the LPGA tour, got off to a hot start, taking a 3-up lead with birdies at the first three holes. But Coleman pulled a hole back with a birdie at the fifth, won the 10th with a bogey and squared the match with a birdie to take the 11th hole. She kept her nerve after Henderson again edged ahead at 13 -- where the Canadian's bogey beat Coleman's double bogey -- nabbing birdies at the par-five 14th and 16th to take the lead. When she squared the match at 11, Coleman said, she wasn't really keeping track of how the match stood.

Covid-related claims could hit B3bn as cases continue to riseTotal claims from Covid-19 insurance could soar to 3 billion baht this year as daily infections continue to rise, says Thai General Insurance Association (TGIA) president Anon Vangvasu. The total amount of Covid-19 insurance premiums received as of May 15 stood at 3.5 billion baht from 9 million policies. However, the hike in Covid claims is unlikely to have a major impact on insurance businesses as Covid policies are relatively small with limited protection, he said. In the first quarter, Covid patients with insurance coverage tallied 10% of all cases, however that figure could rise to 20% in April, he said. The figure for accident claims is estimated to be below 62% of auto premiums received.

Get vaccine act togetherThe government must do a better job allaying fears about a shortage of vaccines while getting its act together before the mass vaccination rollout starts, supposedly next week. Announcements by several hospitals including Vachira Hospital and Chulabhorn Royal Academy delaying appointments for people who registered for AstraZeneca vaccines have sparked speculation about a shortage. The government bought 117,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines early this year. He said the delay is due to the government changing its plan, lengthening the period between administering the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the second from 10 to 16 weeks. It's time the government opens up about its vaccine procurement, providing full details about purchase agreements, terms and conditions.

Lottery solution for old-age securityA man points to some lottery tickets for sale at Khok Wua intersection, Ratchadamnoen Avenue, in the capital. As Thailand rapidly ages, one of its challenges is how to encourage the poor to save for old-age security. How to convince them to shift their lottery money to long-term savings they can fall upon in old age when they can no longer work? Another measure is to help the lottery buyers become aware of how they could spend the money more wisely. The government should also increase distribution channels to make it easy for them to save through savings lotteries.

Spend new loan wiselyThe government's plan to borrow additional funds to cover its Covid-19 mitigation and relief programmes seems to be drawing more criticism with each passing day. While the former finance minister conceded that the loan is necessary, he said the drafting of the executive decree was done behind closed doors without transparency. Without transparency and a good monitoring system, the public won't get to feel the full benefit from this 700-billion-baht loan. Just a few days earlier, former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij also warned the government to prioritise its spending. The loan is expected to help prop up the Thai economy until the later part of this year, when the country achieves herd immunity, so the government needs to spend it wisely.

Leaky border poses riskThe alarming report of new Covid-19 variants found in a construction worker camp in Bangkok and in the deep South again shed light on the problem of illegal migration. The two variants may have carried into the country by illegal migrants. Although Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed authorities to ramp up border surveillance to prevent the entry of illegal migrants, the problem of migrants being smuggled across border remains. Unfortunately, those illegal migrants may be just the tip of the iceberg. Many illegal migrants were arrested.
