Tanit Chearavanont, group chief wholesale business officer of CP AXTRA Plc, told the Bangkok Post about the company's transformation into a true retail tech player. RETAIL TECH COMPANYMr Tanit defined "retail tech" as more than simply launching an e-commerce platform. According to him, the true meaning of retail tech lies in transforming an organisation to be driven by data and technology. "E-commerce is a big component, but it doesn't mean everything when it comes to retail tech," he said. Recently, Makro PRO, the company's e-commerce platform, was recognised as the No.1 Thai-owned e-commerce platform and Thailand's top e-commerce platform based on first-party (1P) sales.

Carney's speech signals end of Western illusionsWhen the late playwright Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll first opened 20 years ago, it was deeply personal for me as a student at Cambridge studying film in Prague. Two decades later, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent speech in Davos felt like the sequel. Mr Carney's reference to Havel was not some quaint historical aside. Mr Carney's speech highlights that we all must reject nostalgia for a rules-based system that never fully delivered on its promises. What all tyrannical systems share, Mr Carney reminds us, is "the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false".

Data centres used for AI model training and deployment require enormous amounts of energy for processing and cooling. Energy consultancy Cleanview has already identified 46 data centres that plan to build their own power plants, primarily with gas-fired generation. Their combined 56 GW of capacity represents around 30% of all planned US data-centre capacity, the consultancy said. One of the country's other major power networks, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), also risks being overwhelmed by surging data-centre demand. The rush to build data centres to support the global AI arms race is set to become a defining economic feature of this decade, if not this century.

We don't need 'Seven Dangerous Days'A city official campaigns for road safety during the Songkran Festival in Bangkok on April 11, 2022. Despite the traffic light, a reckless motorcycle may still cross. Twice a year, during two major national holidays, New Year and Songkran, the country traditionally enters what officials dubbed the "Seven Dangerous Days". Road safety improves when drivers recognise that the driving space is a public space that must be shared equally. With the Songkran travel season only a few weeks away, this is a timely moment for a caring government to recalibrate its road safety campaign by influencing behavioural change every single day, not just highlighting the "Seven Dangerous Days".

(File photo: Pattarapong Chatpattarasill)Gen Z is generally regarded as the first generation fully raised in the technological era. While some older generations debate whether AI might do more harm than good, Gen Z has made it a part of daily life. As a Gen Z teenager, the transition felt magical and shocking; it made me aware of how fast time flies. This technological leap has brought us to the doorstep of the AI era. Society often assumes that because we were born into the technological era, we must naturally master every new innovation.

Under the old system, drivers often waited at red lights despite no oncoming traffic, or sat through green lights with no movement on the opposite side. The new adaptive system detects traffic volumes in real time and adjusts each cycle accordingly — extending greens when queues grow, shortening them when roads are clear, and cutting unnecessary delays. The 74 upgraded intersections cover major congestion-prone corridors, including Sukhumvit, Rama IV, Phahon Yothin, Ramkhamhaeng, Sathorn, Silom, Rama IX and Ploenchit. Of these, 168 have no traffic lights, while 578 are controlled by traffic signals. Among the signalised intersections, 433 operate on a fixed‑time system with preset cycles, and 71 use an older adaptive loop‑detector system.

Cuba vows to counter 'terrorist' attacks after clashing with US-based boatCuban coast guard ships docked at the port of Havana where the authorities say they will defend against 'terrorist and mercenary' attacks from abroad. All aboard were Cubans living in the United States, according to the ministry. Another man sent from the United States to take part in this operation was arrested on Cuban soil and confessed, it added. The Cuban government frequently reports incursions by speedboats from the United States into its territorial waters but deadly clashes are rarer. Incursion incidents are often related to people-smuggling to the United States or drug trafficking, and have included chases, shootouts and armed attacks on border guards.
