The government of China has donated 1.6 million more doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine to Sri Lanka to boost the national inoculation drive. This is reportedly the largest amount of coronavirus vaccines the Chinese government has donated to Sri Lanka on a single occasion. The new development brings the total number of Sinopharm vaccines China has donated to Sri Lanka to 2.7 million. After the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) approved the emergency use of Sinopharm vaccine in the country in March, Sri Lanka received the first donation of 500,000 doses of the China-manufactured vaccine on May 26. Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine, also known as BBIBP-CorV, is produced by China National Biotec Group (CNBG) – a subsidiary of China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation (SINOPHARM).

Sri Lanka on Monday (July 26) recorded the highest number of vaccinations rolled out in a single day, says the State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals. Thereby, 437,878 coronavirus jabs in total have been rolled out within the day, Prof. Channa Jayasumana stated. According to the Epidemiology Unit’s COVID-19 immunization progress report, as many as 356,628 have people received the first shot of China-developed Sinopharm vaccine. Meanwhile, 55,722 completed the vaccine course as they were administered the second dose of Sinopharm jab. As per official data, the national inoculation drive has rolled out more than 8,240,000 vaccinations against the novel coronavirus in the country.

COLOMBO (News 1st): The rate of Oral Cancer patients in Sri Lanka has increased by ninefold within the past two decades, the National Cancer Control Programme said on Tuesday (Jul. The 27th of July has been declared as the ‘World Head and Neck Cancer Day’ by the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncology Societies. Around 2700 Oral Cancer patients are detected in the country every year, Consultant Community Physician Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, the Director at the National Cancer Control Programme told News 1st. According to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health, Oral Cancer is the most prominent cancer among males, amounting to 15 percent of all male cancers, while it is the 08th most common cancer amongst the country’s female population. COLOMBO (News 1st): Another consignment of China’s Sinopharm vaccines will reach the island today (Jul. The consignment of 1.6 million Sinopharm jabs is received as a donation from the government of China, Prof. Channa Jayasumana, the State Minister of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals told News 1st. According to State Minister Prof. Jayasumana, the consignment includes 1.6 million syringes as well. As of now, with today’s donation set to arrive in the country, Sri Lanka has received 10.7 million Sinopharm vaccines doses from China. Sri Lanka has proposed holding the BIMSTEC summit in early December. Sri Lanka is the currently the chair of the grouping and had earlier proposed holding the summit in August. The proposal had been made during a recent virtual meeting of BIMSTEC foreign ministers, Foreign Ministry sources said. The last summit took place in Kathmandu in 2018, with Indian PM Narendra Modi and other regional leaders attending the meet.
